Autopistas (AP) are toll motorways operated by private companies. Autovias (A) are toll-free motorways and motorways.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Road tolls:<\/strong>&nbsp;On AP roads you pay a motorway toll. You pay at toll stations on the road. Both cash and cards can be used to pay, but it is advisable to always carry cash for safety reasons. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Environmental zones:<\/strong>&nbsp;Barcelona and some neighbouring cities ban vehicles of emission class III and below from driving on working days if air pollution exceeds a certain level. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Speed limits:<\/strong>&nbsp;On motorways, passenger cars drive at 120, motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes at 100 and motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes at 90 km\/h.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Per mille limit:<\/strong>&nbsp;0.5 (0.3 for professional drivers and new licence holders)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Traffic rules:<\/strong>&nbsp;Talking on a handheld phone and sending text messages while driving is prohibited. Heavy vehicles must keep at least 50 metres from the vehicle in front on single-lane roads outside urban areas. In tunnels, all vehicles must keep at least 100 metres apart. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Words in traffic:<\/strong>&nbsp;\"Aparcamiento\" means parking and \"despacio\" means slowing down.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fuel:<\/strong>&nbsp;Diesel is called gasoil or gasoleo. Petrol is called gasolina and is available in 95 or 98 octane. Extra expensive variants with fancy names are hardly worth the cost.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Parking rules:<\/strong>&nbsp;A solid yellow line on the road means no parking and a dashed yellow line means no stopping. A blue line means that you can park for two hours during the day, with a parking disc. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Security:<\/strong>&nbsp;Watch out for gangs along the Mediterranean coast and don't leave your car unattended with valuables. Also, make sure you have Roadside Assistance so that you can get help on the spot in case of an accident.
