The bathing culture is part of the city&#039;s history and identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mineral-rich thermal water comes from hot springs underground and has been used for bathing and treatments for a long time. Which one is best for you depends on what kind of experience you are looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Szechenyi<\/strong> is the classic choice for those who want to experience a large and impressive Budapest spa with both indoor and outdoor pools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rudas<\/strong> Suitable for those who are curious about Budapest&#039;s Ottoman bathing history and want to bathe in a historical environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lukacs<\/strong> is another historic thermal bath and an alternative for those who want to discover something other than the most famous tourist attractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Palatine<\/strong> is located on Margaret Island and has more of a bathing and recreational facility character, with both thermal baths and other types of pools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then of course there is <strong>Gellert<\/strong>, one of the city&#039;s most famous baths. We have bathed here ourselves, but right now it is not possible to follow in our footsteps. The Gell\u00e9rt Baths are closed for extensive renovation and are expected to reopen in 2028 according to current plans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Szechenyibadet_%E2%80%93_Budapests_stora_klassiker\"><\/span>Sz\u00e9chenyi Baths \u2013 Budapest&#039;s great classic<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sz\u00e9chenyi Baths, Sz\u00e9chenyi Gy\u00f3gyf\u00fcrd\u0151, is probably the bath that most people recognize from pictures of Budapest. The large facility is located in the city park V\u00e1rosliget, not far from Heroes&#039; Square. The bath opened in 1913 and has both indoor thermal pools and large outdoor pools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not least the outdoor environment that has made Sz\u00e9chenyi so famous. Here you can bathe in warm water surrounded by the grand yellow building, even when the air temperature is significantly lower. It is almost as much a palace as it is a bathhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But right now the doors are closed. Gell\u00e9rt Baths closed on October 1, 2025 for an extensive renovation. According to the current plan, the actual construction work should start at the end of 2026 and the renovated bath will be able to welcome guests again in 2028. When we visited Gell\u00e9rt, there were small private changing cabins that almost looked like minimal rooms, with space for both clothes and belongings. We shared one of these and eventually managed to get through all the steps and to the bath itself. There were several pools with different temperatures, from a larger swimming pool to smaller pools with significantly warmer water. Lying in warm thermal water surrounded by the beautiful architecture was just as wonderful as we had imagined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our only mistake was that we hadn&#039;t set aside more time. Next time, we thought. At the municipal baths in Budapest, <strong>bath slippers <\/strong>mandatory, and you should shower before going into the pools. <strong>Bathing cap<\/strong> required in swimming pools, but not generally in all thermal pools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may also be wise to bring your own towel and other bathing gear you may need. The ability to rent or purchase equipment varies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official swimming operator recommends that tickets be purchased online to avoid queues. Payment at the facilities is by bank or debit card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And above all: take your time. Our experience from Gell\u00e9rt is that the environment itself is a big part of the experience. Children under 14 years of age are not allowed to use the bath according to current regulations. <strong>Sz\u00e9chenyi, Rudas, Luk\u00e1cs or Dand\u00e1r<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At other baths operated by the Budapest Municipal Baths Company, children under the age of 14 are not allowed to use medical thermal pools unless prescribed by a doctor. However, there may be other pools and bathing facilities intended for children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Palatinus and other more family-oriented swimming facilities may therefore be better alternatives than the classic thermal baths if you are traveling with younger children. We have visited, among other places <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomtravel.se\/en\/2016\/06\/termalbad-och-vinregion-i-sodra-ungern\/\">Hark\u00e1ny<\/a><\/strong> in southern Hungary, a classic spa and bathing resort known for its sulfurous thermal waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hark\u00e1ny is also close to the Vill\u00e1ny wine region and the city of P\u00e9cs. So you can achieve a pretty pleasant combination of culture, wine, good food and hot baths there.
