Here you&#039;ll find works by Bernini, Caravaggio and Raphael, among others, gathered in a magnificent villa that is almost an attraction in itself. Here is located, among other things, the grand Victor Emmanuel Monument. Regardless of what you think of the monument, this is an exciting and intense place. The Palazzo Venezia palace is also located here, and from here you can reach Rome&#039;s largest shopping street, Via del Corso. The name means roughly &quot;people&#039;s square&quot;, and there is almost always a buzz of activity here. Three main streets lead from the square into central Rome, with Via del Corso being the most famous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But don&#039;t just stop at the square itself. Take the stairs and walkways up to Pincio, which is located on the edge of Villa Borghese. When you reach the top, you&#039;ll be rewarded with a fantastic view of Piazza del Popolo, the rooftops of Rome, and the dome of St. Peter&#039;s Basilica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the kind of place that you can take your time in. Stop at the viewing terrace, lean against the railing and look out over Rome for a while. In the morning, the square is filled with market stalls selling fruit, vegetables, spices, flowers and other Italian delicacies. It&#039;s lively, colorful and fun to stroll around for a while, although today the market is also well-suited for tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the market stalls disappear, restaurants and bars take over and towards evening the square fills with people meeting over a glass of wine or dinner. Campo de&#039; Fiori is also perfect for a walk through central Rome. Many of the city&#039;s major attractions are within walking distance of each other, but don&#039;t try to fit everything in. Here&#039;s our suggestion for two intense but wonderful days in Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 1 \u2013 Colosseum, Ancient Rome and Trastevere<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Morning:<\/strong>&nbsp;Start early at the Colosseum, preferably with a pre-booked ticket. Then continue straight to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Expect the entire area to take several hours if you want to see it all without stress.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lunch:<\/strong>&nbsp;Head towards Piazza Venezia and find a trattoria along the way, while also taking the opportunity to see the mighty Victor Emmanuel Monument.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Afternoon:<\/strong>&nbsp;Continue to the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. Here the distances are short and it is almost as much fun to walk through the alleys between the sights as it is to arrive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Evening:<\/strong>&nbsp;Cross the Tiber to Trastevere. Stroll through the alleys and small piazzas and end the day with a long Italian dinner. After all the ancient ruins, it&#039;s nice to just sit down, order something delicious and enjoy the nightlife.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 2 \u2013 Vatican, Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Morning:<\/strong>&nbsp;Start your day in Vatican City. If you have booked the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, you should arrive early and allow plenty of time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Morning:<\/strong>&nbsp;Continue to St. Peter&#039;s Square and St. Peter&#039;s Basilica. Then walk towards Castel Sant&#039;Angelo and over the beautiful Ponte Sant&#039;Angelo.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lunch:<\/strong>&nbsp;Continue into central Rome and settle down at a restaurant or caf\u00e9. This is also a good opportunity to try a Roman classic like carbonara, cacio e pepe or amatriciana.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Afternoon:<\/strong>&nbsp;Now the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps await. Feel free to take detours through the smaller streets \u2013 in Rome it is often between the major sights that you will find the coziest piazzas and alleys.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Evening:<\/strong>&nbsp;Finish at Piazza del Popolo and walk up to Pincio for views of Rome. If your legs still have some left to give, you can continue through Villa Borghese. Otherwise, do as the Romans do and end the trip over a glass of wine, dinner and of course a last Italian gelato.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Our advice:<\/strong>&nbsp;Two days is enough to experience a lot of Rome, but not to see everything. Book the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums in advance, especially, and leave some space in your schedule. If you want to be able to walk to most of the sights, a central location is worth a lot, while you&#039;ll get more of a local atmosphere and often quieter evenings if you choose an area a little outside the city center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Centro Storico \u2013 best for the first trip<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to stay in the middle of Rome&#039;s classics, the Centro Storico is an excellent choice. Here you have the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain within easy walking distance and plenty of restaurants, cafes and small alleys right outside your door. The location is hard to beat, but accommodation can be expensive and the area is almost always full of visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trastevere \u2013 best for restaurants and nightlife<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trastevere is for those who prefer to wake up among cobblestone alleys and small piazzas rather than the biggest monuments. In the evening the area fills up with restaurants, bars and people heading out to eat. It is charming and lively \u2013 but choose a quieter side street if you want to sleep early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monti \u2013 charming and close to the Colosseum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monti is close to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum but also has its own neighborhood feel with small restaurants, wine bars, shops and cafes. A good area for those who want to live centrally without feeling like you&#039;re living in the middle of one of Rome&#039;s biggest tourist areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prati \u2013 best near Vatican City<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the Vatican Museums and St. Peter&#039;s Basilica are high on your agenda, Prati is a smart alternative. The area is right next to the Vatican City and feels more like a typical Roman residential area than the more touristy parts of the city center. There are also plenty of restaurants and good metro connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We stayed at the super cozy little hotel Room91, which Peter found online and which had received good reviews. After our visit, we can also highly recommend this little gem. The hotel is located on Via Ottaviano 91 in the Prati area, a lively street with shops and the metro, just a few minutes walk from the Vatican City.
