It sounded easy. Start in Mem, follow the canal through Sweden and end in Sj\u00f6torp. That&#039;s part of the freedom. That&#039;s why we made a detour to Stegeborg, a couple of miles from S\u00f6derk\u00f6ping. No one presses the gas and overtakes. We took the opportunity to visit Vreta Monastery and also saw the aqueduct at Ljungsbro. It is exactly the type of stop that made our canal trip grow. Borensberg \u2013 here the G\u00f6ta Canal slows down even more<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the mighty locks in Berg, you encounter another side of the canal in Borensberg. The town is small and the canal flows right through the community. You don&#039;t really have to do much. Stroll along the canal, watch a boat pass by, have a coffee or eat ice cream and let the time pass. In the area we also took the opportunity to fill the camper with goodies. Here are Borenshult&#039;s five locks, which together form the canal&#039;s second largest lock staircase and the steepest. Motala Motor Museum was right next door, but when the sun came out the beer and the beach won. The museum had to wait until another time. Finally we cycled on to Varamobaden. The boats leave Motala and head out to Lake V\u00e4ttern. Of course, we couldn&#039;t follow. And this is where I think you should take advantage of the motorhome&#039;s great advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We instead continued around Lake V\u00e4ttern and made the journey our own. Crayfish and smoked whitefish from V\u00e4ttern together with cheeses from Brunneby musteri. Sometimes the best restaurants are not restaurants at all. Finally we ended up in Unden\u00e4s, asked some locals if we could stay there and were told that the land belonged to the church. We were allowed to stay for one night and also got a long conversation and information about the area. The fortress is not part of the G\u00f6ta Canal, but the connection is much stronger than you might first think. Baltzar von Platen also had ideas about Sweden&#039;s central defense, and Karlsborg Fortress began to be built on Lake V\u00e4ttern. We arrived early in the day and hadn&#039;t really decided whether we would stay. We thought:&nbsp;<em>We&#039;ll see how it feels.<\/em> As soon as we rolled in, we knew. <strong>We&#039;re going to stay here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The campsite is right on the G\u00f6ta Canal and from the camper we could see the boats gliding past. Peter of course decided that we needed a film where we cycled past the camera. It sounds simple until two people are going to be in the film and no one is left behind the camera. The solution was to hang up a mobile phone and a selfie stand and hope for the best. T\u00f6reboda \u2013 20 seconds across the G\u00f6ta Canal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next stop was T\u00f6reboda, where the canal and railway meet. This is also home to the ferry Lina, Sweden&#039;s smallest regular ferry. The small ferry is pulled by hand across the G\u00f6ta Canal using a rope and the journey itself only takes about 20\u201325 seconds. That&#039;s about as far from an Atlantic cruise as you can get. There are two double locks here and it is a lovely place to sit down and watch the boats. We parked the camper next to it and laid out the day&#039;s lunch: hot dogs and sausage rolls. There are two locks, a hotel and restaurant, and a small mini canal for children. But we also saw something we recognized. At the locks was the paddle steamer&nbsp;<strong>Eric Nordevall II<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 the replica of the ship that sank in Lake V\u00e4ttern. Sj\u00f6torp \u2013 where our canal trip reached Lake V\u00e4nern<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally we arrived at Sj\u00f6torp. This is where the G\u00f6ta Canal begins \u2013 or ends, depending on which direction you come from. For us, it was the end point. There are eight locks in Sj\u00f6torp and it was also here that work on the G\u00f6ta Canal began in 1810. And bought fish. Perch fillets and pike-perch were taken to the camper. Then there was only one small detail left. Where would we stay? The parking spaces in central Sj\u00f6torp were full when we arrived. Again. But just outside the village we found a large green field that served as a simple campsite. We stood next to the locks and watched as the boats were raised and lowered. We cycled along the towpaths and waved to the people on board. Suddenly it was&nbsp;<strong>vi<\/strong>&nbsp;who found us down in the locks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Same channel \u2013 a completely different experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the boat you can see how much work is going on around each lock. The captain keeps watch, the staff runs with towlines and the distances to the lock walls can be vanishingly small. The boat glided slowly through green Sweden. We passed farms, cows and sheep, met other boats and just sat and looked at the landscape.
