Pantalica has over 5,000 tombs carved into the rock<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In southeastern Sicily lies <strong>Pantalica<\/strong>, a fascinating area where thousands of tombs have been carved directly into the rock walls. UNESCO estimates there are more than 5,000 tombs, most of them from the period between the 13th and 6th centuries BC. Together with Syracuse, Pantalica is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tombs are scattered across dramatic cliff sides above the valleys. In other words, archaeology and nature meet here in a rather spectacular way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Agrigento_har_nagra_av_varldens_framsta_grekiska_tempel\"><\/span>9. Agrigento has some of the world&#039;s most important Greek temples<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ancient Akragas, today&#039;s Agrigento, was founded as a Greek colony in the 5th century BC and developed into one of the leading cities of the Mediterranean. Today, it is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomtravel.se\/en\/2015\/07\/antika-tempel-i-agrigento-sicilien\/\">Valley of the Temples<\/a><\/strong>, the Valley of the Temples, one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Sicily. Here, several Doric temples and temple remains line the landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most famous is the Temple of Concordia, which is unusually well preserved. Almost all of the villa&#039;s 50 or so rooms have mosaic floors. Together, the mosaics cover around 3,500 square meters and depict everything from hunting and mythology to everyday life and exotic animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps most famous is the mosaic of young women in two-piece suits that look surprisingly similar to modern bikinis. The bikini was not invented in Sicily during Roman times, of course. Etna is still very active and eruptions, lava flows and ash clouds are a recurring part of life in eastern Sicily. The slopes of the volcano offer skiing opportunities when snow and volcano conditions allow. The combination is quite hard to beat: skiing on an active volcano with the Mediterranean Sea far below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Promising skiing in the morning and swimming in the afternoon, as we once did in this article, was perhaps a bit overly enthusiastic. The plants are placed in depressions in the ground and pruned so that they can withstand the island&#039;s strong winds and dry climate. The volcanoes here have been studied since at least the 18th century and have given names to two types of volcanic activity: Strombolian and Vulcanian. It is Italy&#039;s largest opera house and one of Palermo&#039;s most famous buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Film lovers may also recognize the stairs outside. This is where the dramatic final scene in <em>The Godfather III<\/em> in. However, when the scenes depicting the village of Corleone were filmed, among other things, <strong>Savoca and Forza d&#039;Agr\u00f2<\/strong> in eastern Sicily. The town of Corleone had changed too much to fit the era that the films were supposed to depict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Savoca is home to Bar Vitelli, which appears in the first film when Michael Corleone is in Sicily. The films are of course fictional and should not be confused with the real history of the Sicilian mafia.
