We think one of the city&#039;s greatest assets is its location. J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping is located right at the southern tip of Lake V\u00e4ttern, and water is present almost everywhere you go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, there is much to discover beyond Lake V\u00e4ttern. We have both walked and cycled through J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping and find the water to be a big part of the experience. We have walked here many times ourselves and it is only when you leave the car that you start to put the different parts of the city together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the West side you will find the Matchbox area and the magnificent Sofia Church, while the City Hall Park is centrally located between the West and East sides. In J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping, the distances are also just right and sooner or later you almost always end up by some water again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want more structure on your walk, there is also a historical city walk through western J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping. Walk or cycle around Lake Munksj\u00f6n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">V\u00e4ttern gets a lot of attention, but J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping has another lake in the middle of the city: Munksj\u00f6n. Here too, we have moved around both on foot and by bike. There are walking and cycling paths around the lake, and along parts of the water, new homes, restaurants and modern urban environments have sprung up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will be a completely different J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping experience than along Lake V\u00e4ttern. Where Lake V\u00e4ttern feels large, open and almost like the sea, Lake Munksj\u00f6n is more of a part of the city itself. Go shopping at the market at V\u00e4stra Torget<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After many years of recurring visits to J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping, we actually managed to miss one of the city&#039;s most vibrant traditions: the market stalls at V\u00e4stra Torget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we finally arrived here on a Saturday morning in September, we were greeted by people, flowers, berries, fish, shellfish and boxes full of mushrooms. Chanterelles and Karl Johan coexisted with lingonberries, blueberries, heather and autumn flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was colorful, folky, and somehow much more alive than just another building that you take a photo of and move on from. Trolls with big noses, dark forests, princesses and creatures that look like they could step out from behind the next fir tree. But at J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping County Museum we got much closer to the man behind the pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bauer was born in J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping in 1882 and became known primarily for his illustrations for <em>Among elves and trolls<\/em>. Through their letters, we get close to love, creation, and a marriage that was considerably more complicated than the fairy tale of the prince and princess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story also had a brutal end. In November 1918, John and Ester, together with their three-year-old son Bengt, called Putte, traveled across Lake V\u00e4ttern on the steamer Per Brahe. The ship sank and everyone on board perished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After following Bauer through the fairytale forests, the old newspaper clippings about the disaster feel almost shockingly real. For us, the exhibition was one of the strongest cultural experiences in J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping. Discover the City Park and the view over J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping City Park is located high above the city center and is the kind of place where you can easily stay longer than you intended. There are large green areas, walking paths, an open-air museum and J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping&#039;s largest playground. From the height you can see out over J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping with Sofia Church as a landmark and Lake V\u00e4ttern spreading out behind the city. On clear days you can see all the way to Visings\u00f6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The park also contains the B\u00e4ckaby church ruins. The old wooden church was moved here from B\u00e4ckaby in the early 20th century, but was later destroyed in a fire. Swim on Lake V\u00e4tterstranden<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the summer, there&#039;s a pretty hard-to-beat J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping tip: go to the beach. Lake V\u00e4tterstranden is located in the middle of the city, and the long sandy beach makes J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping feel surprisingly much like a seaside resort when the sun is shining. There are also green spaces and paths for walking and cycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The municipality&#039;s urban environment program describes a roughly two-kilometer-long sandy beach in the middle of the city \u2013 which is actually quite remarkable for a Swedish city the size of J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping. And no, V\u00e4ttern may not be known for tropical swimming temperatures. For us, the exhibition area is therefore much more than a few large halls next to Lake V\u00e4ttern. We visited Elmia Husvagn Husbil back in 2009 as regular camper owners. At one lecture, Curre the parrot even showed up with a deck chair. Challenge your family or friends on Prison Island<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to do something more active, you can try <a href=\"https:\/\/prisonislandjonkoping.se\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Escape Room in J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping<\/a>. Here you compete together in teams and try to solve different challenges in cells to collect points. We haven&#039;t tested this particular facility, but we have tried similar activities elsewhere and think that this type of challenge is a fun way to socialize - especially if the weather is showing its less than charming side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The facility also has Laser Island. Some of our absolute favorites are located along Lake V\u00e4ttern \u2013 and we have returned to several of them many times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"11_Upptack_Huskvarna_och_Husqvarna_Museum\"><\/span>11. Discover Huskvarna and the Husqvarna Museum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just a few kilometers from central J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping lies Huskvarna, which has now almost grown together with its larger neighbor. But it has its own history \u2013 and much of it revolves around Husqvarna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the Husqvarna Museum you can follow the company from weapon manufacturing to sewing machines, stoves, motorcycles, chainsaws and much more. Visit the stunning Habo Church<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have visited around 300 churches during our travels in Sweden. Despite that, there is one church outside J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping that we still talk about a little bit. Habo Church may very well be the most beautiful church we have seen inside in Sweden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost the entire church is covered in paintings from the 18th century, and wherever you look, new details emerge. The church&#039;s medieval baptismal font was once removed and eventually used as mortar to mix red paint. Take a trip to Gr\u00e4nna<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#039;ve been to Gr\u00e4nna at least five times and love to return. Maybe it&#039;s the old houses and the small-town feel, maybe the candy canes \u2013 but most of all we think it&#039;s Lake V\u00e4ttern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, it&#039;s part of the experience to taste Gr\u00e4nna&#039;s most famous invention. At Grenna Museum you can follow the dramatic Andr\u00e9e expedition to the North Pole, and down in the harbor you can find restaurants, boating and the ferry to Visings\u00f6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When our South African friends Henri and Michelle traveled through southern Sweden with us, Gr\u00e4nna was one of the places we wanted to show them. Take the ferry to Visings\u00f6<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Gr\u00e4nna, the ferry goes over to Visings\u00f6, and we like to think that you should set aside a good part of the day for the island. We brought our electric bikes on the ferry and found that cycling was a perfect way to discover Visings\u00f6. There are small roads, farms, plantations, forests and historical sites and it is easy to stop when something looks interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Near the ferry terminal lies the Visingsborg castle ruins. Further south, the large oak forest and the remains of N\u00e4s Castle, one of Sweden&#039;s early royal castles, await. But what we may remember best is the cycling itself. The scenery, the peace and quiet and the feeling that the path between the sights is at least as important as the stops. Stop at Brahehus<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are driving between J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping and Gr\u00e4nna, it is hard to miss the Brahehus castle ruins high above the E4. The ruins are of course worth seeing in themselves, but for us it is above all the location that makes the stop. From here a fantastic view opens up over V\u00e4ttern with Visings\u00f6 out in the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, we think the stretch between J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping and Gr\u00e4nna is one of Sweden&#039;s most beautiful stretches of road. Lake V\u00e4ttern follows almost the entire route and at Brahehus you get to see the landscape from above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#039;s also a nice stop in connection with a Gr\u00e4nna excursion. We just think that&#039;s nice \u2013 then we have a reason to come back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rosenlund&#039;s rosarium<\/strong> is one of the places we haven&#039;t visited yet. There are around 550 different varieties of roses here and the place has received international attention for its rose garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rock Lake<\/strong> attracts with nature close to the city, and <strong>Stupid bog<\/strong> looks like it could offer a much wilder nature experience. We would rather combine the city&#039;s highlights with an excursion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 1 \u2013 Jonkoping<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Morning:<\/strong> Start at the Match Museum and then take a stroll through the Match Area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Morning:<\/strong> Continue on foot through the city center. If it&#039;s Saturday, you can take the opportunity to visit the market stalls at V\u00e4stra Torget.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lunch:<\/strong> Eat somewhere downtown or near the water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Afternoon:<\/strong> Choose J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping County Museum and John Bauer or head up to Stadsparken. If you have plenty of time, you can do both.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Evening:<\/strong> Walk along Lake V\u00e4ttern or Lake Munksj\u00f6n and end the day at a restaurant in the city center.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 2 \u2013 choose an excursion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you want <strong>industrial history and outlook<\/strong> you choose Huskvarna with Husqvarna Museum, Smedbyn and Huskvarnaberget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Would you rather make one? <strong>full-day excursion along Lake V\u00e4ttern<\/strong> Drive to Gr\u00e4nna and take the ferry across to Visings\u00f6. On the way back you can stop at Brahehus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Our tip:<\/strong> Don&#039;t try to squeeze in J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping, Huskvarna, Gr\u00e4nna and Visings\u00f6 in the same day. It might be possible \u2013 but it will be much more enjoyable if some part of the trip also takes some time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Var_ska_man_bo_i_Jonkoping\"><\/span>Where to stay in Jonkoping?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which area is best depends primarily on how you want to plan your visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Centre<\/strong> is our choice for a first visit. Here you will stay close to restaurants, shopping, the station, the Matchbox area and several of the attractions in this guide.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Near Lake V\u00e4ttern<\/strong> Suitable for those who appreciate the location and surroundings above all. At Munksj\u00f6n we have stayed at Din Husbil, and in 2026 we stayed for the first time at Lovsj\u00f6badens Camping south of J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping, which was really cozy. In Gr\u00e4nna we have also spent the night with the camper van near the harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, the range, rules and opportunities for motorhomes can change, so always check the current conditions before you go. If you are interested in art and culture, we also recommend John Bauer at J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping County Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How many days do you need in J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one day you can see several of the most important sights in J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping itself. With two days you can also add Huskvarna or take a trip to Gr\u00e4nna. If you also want to discover Visings\u00f6, we think three days or more is even better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can you do in J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping with children?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city park is an easy choice with large green spaces and J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping&#039;s largest playground. In the summer there is V\u00e4tterstranden and for slightly older children and teenagers Prison Island in Huskvarna can be a fun activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can you do in J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping when it rains?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Match Museum and J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping County Museum are our top picks for a rainy day. Husqvarna Museum in Huskvarna is another good option, and Prison Island is perfect for those who want a more active indoor experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the best time to visit J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping is open year-round, but we think the warmer part of the year has a particular advantage because Lake V\u00e4ttern, the promenades, outdoor cafes and excursions then become a bigger part of the experience.
