Long before Roman times, wine was grown in the area. Volumes are relatively small per vineyard, with 28,000 producers sharing around 22,000 hectares. There is less production in Slovenia and the focus is more on quality, which is why the prices are a bit higher. There are very few table wines and if you spend 12-14 euros you get a really good wine. There are few wineries near Ljublijana but you can visit one in the centre of town. Vinoteka has around a hundred Slovenian wines and a tasting of seven wines costs 18 euros. At least 20 are served per glass and the staff are both knowledgeable and friendly.
