Discover Gammelstad Church Town \u2013 Lule\u00e5&#039;s World Heritage Site<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gammelstad Church Town is Lule\u00e5&#039;s most famous attraction and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996. Here are 404 preserved church cottages gathered around the mighty Nederlule\u00e5 Church from the 15th century. Church weekends also became important social occasions, with markets, entertainment and meetings between people from different villages. Young people in particular looked forward to these weekends, as they had the opportunity to meet new acquaintances \u2013 and perhaps a future husband or wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We went on a guided tour and heard many exciting stories about life in the church town. We also visited a viewing cabin, where the small beds with hatches showed how cramped people could live. It was inaugurated in 1492 and is impressive both outside and inside. This means that you can switch between city life, shopping and nice walks along the water quite quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We started by exploring the central neighborhoods, including Storgatan, which is largely pedestrianized. Here you can watch boats and enjoy the proximity to the sea, which is such an important part of Lule\u00e5&#039;s identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We enjoyed strolling around the city center and discovering the different environments. Visit Lule\u00e5 Cathedral<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the heart of central Lule\u00e5 lies the stately cathedral, a large brick building in neo-Gothic style. The church is one of the city&#039;s most prominent landmarks and has a dramatic history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1887, Lule\u00e5 was hit by a major fire that destroyed the previous church, among other things. After the fire, a new church was built, which was inaugurated in 1893. It was built in red brick with tall pointed arched windows and a tower that can be seen from afar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the Diocese of Lule\u00e5 was formed in 1904, the church was given the status of a cathedral. It thus became the center of the new diocese, which covered large parts of northern Sweden. We visited the cathedral and looked at both the impressive exterior and the church room. See art and culture at the House of Culture<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kulturens hus is one of Lule\u00e5&#039;s modern meeting places for art, music and culture. The building is centrally located and houses, among other things, a library, art gallery and concert halls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We visited the art gallery and looked at the current exhibitions. It displays both contemporary art and other exhibitions with varying themes, and it can be an interesting stop even for those who don&#039;t normally go to art museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Cultural House is also an important part of the city&#039;s cultural life, with concerts, lectures and various events. The building is modern and bright, with large glass areas and an open environment that differs from many of Lule\u00e5&#039;s older cultural buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we were here, admission to the art gallery was free. Discover Shopping \u2013 a pioneer among shopping centers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of Lule\u00e5&#039;s more unexpected attractions is the Shopping mall, located right in the city center. This is not just an ordinary shopping mall, but also an interesting piece of Swedish architectural history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shopping was designed by the British-Swedish architect Ralph Erskine and opened in 1955. The idea was to create a protected indoor environment where people could shop and socialize regardless of the weather, something that was especially interesting in a city with long and cold winters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mall is often described as the world&#039;s first modern indoor mall. Of course, there were older covered shopping environments elsewhere in the world, but Shopping&#039;s design was innovative for its time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We took the opportunity to peek inside and thought it was fun to see a building that had such a big impact on the development of modern shopping centers. There are usually seats, refreshments and various summer activities here, and the environment can almost make you forget how far north you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we visited the place, they had created a really summery environment with sand, palm trees and small stalls selling food and ice cream. It was a fun and somewhat unexpected element of the cityscape, and we understand why the place has sometimes been nicknamed Lule\u00e5&#039;s own Gran Canaria. During the summer and parts of the autumn, tour boats go from S\u00f6dra Hamnplan to several of the most popular islands, including Sand\u00f6n, Hinders\u00f6n, Br\u00e4nd\u00f6sk\u00e4r, Sm\u00e5sk\u00e4r, Kluntarna and Junk\u00f6n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sand\u00f6n is Klubbviken havsbad, which is a popular excursion destination with a sandy beach and swimming opportunities. The other islands offer different types of natural environments, older buildings and archipelago history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also the option of joining cruises with food and entertainment, including the M\/S Laponia. If you want to experience Lule\u00e5 from the water, a boat trip is a great option. While the church cottages show how people lived during their church visits, H\u00e4gnan gives a broader picture of everyday life in Norrbotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the summer season, several of the buildings are usually open, and activities and events related to history and traditions are also arranged. There is also a caf\u00e9. There are interactive exhibitions and activities where visitors can try, investigate and experiment themselves. Among other things, you can learn more about space, the mining industry and steel production \u2013 areas that are of great importance to Norrbotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a particularly good excursion destination for families with children, but adults can also find a lot that is exciting. Visit the F21 Aviation Museum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the museums we really appreciated in Lule\u00e5 was the F21 Aviation Museum, which is located next to the Norrbotten Air Flotilla at Kallax. The museum is run by a non-profit association, and it is noticeable that many of the committed members have a great interest in aviation history. It is a special story, as aviation operations in Norrbotten have had to adapt to a climate with long winters, severe cold and great distances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We looked at airplanes, helicopters and other objects, both inside the hangar and outside. Just like the F21 Aviation Museum, it is run by dedicated enthusiasts who work to preserve and restore old railway vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is a large collection of locomotives, wagons and other objects that tell the story of the importance of the railway for Norrbotten. It houses collections that reflect the diversity that characterizes the county, including Sami, Tornedalen, Finnish and Swedish cultural history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> The museum building in central Lule\u00e5 is closed for extensive renovation. However, the museum continues to operate, including exhibitions and other activities at alternative locations. The swimming pool is located at First Camp Arcus and has several pools, water slides, a wave machine and special areas for smaller children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also a kiosk and other facilities, and nearby there is the opportunity to swim outdoors in a natural environment. It is one of the most powerful natural experiences in Norrbotten and well worth a detour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Storforsen is often described as Europe&#039;s largest unregulated rapids. The water rushes through a dramatic landscape of cliffs and forest, and over a distance of about five kilometers the river drops a total of about 82 meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We visited Storforsen during our motorhome trip and were impressed by both the masses of water and the beautiful nature. Here is an old, dried-up riverbed with bare rocks, small pools of water and babbling brooks. The environment was created when a special raft route for timber transport began to be built in the 19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we arrived here, it was full of both children and adults in swimsuits sunbathing and swimming in the calmer pools of water among the rocks. It was an unexpected contrast to the enormous masses of water in the rapids themselves. It is important to distinguish between these calmer areas and the main rapids, where the currents are very strong and dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Storforsen there is also information about the history of rafting, food service and accessible walking trails. There are a number of activities here that are quite different from what you can experience during the warmer months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most special is <strong>ice rink on the sea ice<\/strong>, which is usually plowed from the North Harbour around G\u00fcltzauudden to the South Harbour and further out towards Gr\u00e5sj\u00e4l\u00f6ren. When ice conditions allow, you can walk, skate or kick your way along the track. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In and around Lule\u00e5 there are also opportunities for cross-country skiing and other winter activities. For those who want to try something more adventurous, there are organizers who offer dog sledding, snowshoeing and snowmobile tours. For those who want to discover the city on foot, central accommodation is practical, while campsites and motorhome parking lots may be more suitable for those traveling by motorhome. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Campsites and pitches<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We traveled by ourselves with a camper van and tried several different places during our stay in the area. <strong>One's boat harbour <\/strong>is a parking lot for motorhomes by the water in Lule\u00e5. We thought it was a nice place, but the number of spaces is limited. It was a slightly different place to stay, with proximity to the harbor environment and the large ships. It was a good starting point for exploring the world heritage site and the surrounding area.
