The old part of the city, the Old Town, is so well preserved that it has been included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a popular attraction and we had to queue for a few minutes to get in, in September. When the Crusaders arrived in the 14th century, it was renovated to suit new times and needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rhodes was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1522, and in the period that followed, the castle was used as a command centre and fortress. When the island became part of Italy in 1912, the building was reconstructed according to medieval architecture. The halls are mighty, with incredible space and height. included entry to the Rhodes Archaeological Museum, which is a five-minute walk from the castle, at the other end of <em>Street of the Knights of Rhodes<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The museum is housed in a magnificent building that once served as a hospital for the Knights of St John.
