Pointed towers, double walls and gates lead into a maze of narrow alleys and old stone houses. We thought it was awesome on our first visit. It&#039;s at a little distance that you really see the whole silhouette with the walls and all the towers. There was a fortified settlement here even before the Romans, and during late antiquity the defenses were further developed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the Middle Ages, Carcassonne grew into a strong fortified city. In the 13th century, it became the center of the conflicts during the Albigensian Crusade against the Cathars. After the area came under the control of the French crown, the defenses were further expanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As France&#039;s border with Spain was later moved south, Carcassonne gradually lost its military importance. By the 19th century, the fortifications were so dilapidated that parts were in danger of disappearing.
