On the contrary, we think autumn can be a really good time for a weekend trip. In southern Europe you often avoid the worst of the heat, while cities further north instead attract with autumn colors, culture, restaurants and cozy cafes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another advantage is that many popular tourist cities become a little quieter once the big summer season is over. If you get a sunny day, it&#039;s a great place to walk along the Vltava or go up to one of the city&#039;s viewpoints. The Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps are just the beginning. Then there are all the squares, churches, small alleys and restaurants in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A weekend in Rome can easily involve a lot of walking, so autumn can be a great time to explore the city. Turku, Finland \u2013 an easy autumn weekend across the Baltic Sea<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#039;t always have to travel far to get the feeling of being abroad. Turku is a really nice city for a weekend and also a destination where the journey itself can be part of the experience. From Sweden you can take the ferry across the Baltic Sea and wake up in Finland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once there, the Aura River is a natural starting point. Along the water there are restaurants, caf\u00e9s and historic ships, and within easy reach you will find, among other things, Turku Castle, the cathedral and several interesting museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have visited Turku in different seasons and really like the city. Budapest, Hungary \u2013 thermal baths when the air gets chilly<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Budapest is another one of our European weekend favorites. The Danube divides the city into Buda and Pest, and there are plenty of things to discover on both sides. Buda Castle, the Fisherman&#039;s Bastion, the Parliament and the Great Market Hall are some of the classic sights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in the fall there is another argument: <strong>the thermal baths<\/strong>. Split, Croatia \u2013 Mediterranean feel after the high season<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Split is easily associated with sun, swimming and summer holidays, but we really enjoy the city even outside of the high season. We have actually been here in the winter and found that Split can be really cozy even then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city&#039;s historic heart is in and around the old palace of Emperor Diocletian. Here you can get lost in narrow alleys, sit down at a restaurant or step out onto the palm-lined Riva promenade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early autumn can still be quite pleasant on the Adriatic Sea. Later in the season, the trip is less about beach life and more about history, food, walks and the Mediterranean feel. Wroc\u0142aw, Poland \u2013 colorful and charming<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poland has many great weekend cities, but one of our favorites is Wroc\u0142aw. The large market square, Rynek, is lined with colorful houses and restaurants, and in the middle of the square stands the magnificent Town Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city is also built around the Oder River, with islands and lots of bridges. And then of course we have the dwarves! Hundreds of little dwarf statues are placed all around the city and it is almost impossible not to start looking for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wroc\u0142aw feels big enough for a weekend and is perfect for strolling between attractions, cafes and restaurants. Athens, Greece \u2013 discover antiquity in a more comfortable temperature<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Athens is a good example of a city where autumn can actually be an advantage. In the middle of summer it can get quite hot when climbing the Acropolis rock or walking among the archaeological remains. In autumn the temperature is often much more pleasant for sightseeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And of course there is so much to see here. The Acropolis and the Parthenon are the big stars, but don&#039;t miss the Acropolis Museum, the Agora, the Plaka district and all the viewpoints over the vast city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then it&#039;s lovely to just sit down at a taverna and order Greek snacks. It is also home to the medieval Gravensteen Castle and the Saint Bavo Cathedral, where you can see the famous Ghent Altarpiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ghent is also a great place to visit when the autumn weather is a bit unpredictable. One minute you can be strolling along Graslei and Korenlei and the next you can go to a museum, church or cozy caf\u00e9. Lisbon, Portugal \u2013 hills, trams and mild autumn<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lisbon is built on hills, which means both many uphill climbs and plenty of great viewpoints. The yellow trams rattle through narrow streets, the facades of the houses are covered with beautiful tiles and down by the river Tagus the city opens up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the summer, it can be hot to get around on foot, so the milder temperatures of autumn are perfect for a city weekend, where you can explore neighborhoods like Alfama and Bairro Alto, seek out viewpoints, and of course, eat the occasional pastel de nata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also like that Lisbon feels so different from many of the Central European weekend cities. Here, Europe and Asia meet at the Bosphorus, and the city offers mosques, palaces, bazaars, boats, bustling streets and fantastic food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The major sights include Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and the Grand Bazaar, but a big part of the experience is the city itself. Taking a ferry across the Bosphorus, drinking Turkish tea and just watching the people go by can be just as memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here too, autumn has a big advantage: when the summer heat subsides, it becomes more pleasant to walk around and discover the city. Istanbul is intense and at times a little overwhelming \u2013 but also fascinating.
