class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Giens Peninsula, or Presqu&#039;\u00eele de Giens, juts out into the Mediterranean Sea south of the city of Hy\u00e8res in southern France. The peninsula is connected to the mainland by two narrow strips of land, a so-called double tombolo. There are long beaches and shallow waters, but also pine forests, cliffs, small coves and a much wilder coast. Kitesurfers. Everywhere. The wind was blowing and out on the water lots of colorful sails and kites were cruising back and forth. The surfers gained incredible speed and at times we wondered how everyone managed to avoid tangling the lines, sails and themselves. It was also not very easy to photograph them. The campsite is still there and is located in a green area near the sea, with both tent, caravan and motorhome pitches. We walked through forest and greenery and continued along paths with views of cliffs and the Mediterranean Sea. Small flowers grew along the way and between the trees, views of the sea opened up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are several stretches of the coastal path in Giens. <strong>Coastal Trail<\/strong>, so those who want to hike can choose between different tours and starting points. The temperature had dropped to around 23 degrees and while we might not have been happy about the wind, the surfers were all the happier. We walked down to the beach just to watch. Here are three islands that we later visited:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomtravel.se\/en\/2018\/08\/notre-dame-pa-porquerolles-frankrikes-vackraste-strand\/\">Porquerolles<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 the largest of the islands, where we rented bikes and went to some of the nice beaches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomtravel.se\/en\/2018\/08\/on-port-cros-i-frankrike-nationalpark\/\">Port-Cros<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 national park with protected nature and hiking trails.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomtravel.se\/en\/2018\/08\/ile-du-levant-i-frankrike-europas-enda-naturisto\/\">Levant Island<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 known, among other things, for the naturist area H\u00e9liopolis, where our day trip unexpectedly ended with a night in a tent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boats to Porquerolles depart from, among others, <strong>Fondue Tour<\/strong> at the far end of the Gien Peninsula, making it easy to combine the peninsula with an island excursion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.freedomtravel.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/Notre-Dame-vackraste-strand-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Notre Dame vackraste strand\" class=\"wp-image-72551\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.freedomtravel.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/Notre-Dame-vackraste-strand-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.freedomtravel.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/Notre-Dame-vackraste-strand-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.freedomtravel.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/Notre-Dame-vackraste-strand-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.freedomtravel.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/Notre-Dame-vackraste-strand-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.freedomtravel.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/Notre-Dame-vackraste-strand.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The beach at Porquerolles.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ar_Gienshalvon_vard_ett_besok\"><\/span>Is the Gien Peninsula worth a visit?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, especially if you like nature, beaches and activities on or by the sea. Giens is not the French Riviera that is all about luxury yachts, designer boutiques and movie stars. Instead, it was cliffs, hiking trails, wind, sea and colorful kite surfers that stuck in our memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We never tried surfing ourselves.
