There is also a strong tradition of fish and couscous here and fantastic nature just around the corner. After a rather intense first morning in Sicily, we continued west with the camper van and finally landed in San Vito Lo Capo. Swim on the beach in San Vito Lo Capo<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The large beach is one of the main reasons to travel to San Vito Lo Capo. The light sand stretches along the sheltered bay and the turquoise waters are framed by Monte Monaco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is also special is how close the village itself is to the beach. Beachwear is replaced by more dressed-up holiday clothes and people head out to eat, drink and stroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What we observed during our visit is actually an old Sicilian tradition. The evening walk is called <em>ostrich<\/em> and simply means strolling back and forth along the main street, meeting people and watching the world go by. But for those who want to discover more than the beach, the sanctuary is one of the most important historical sites in San Vito Lo Capo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_At_fiskcouscous\"><\/span>4. Eat fish couscous<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we were in San Vito Lo Capo we noticed that a lot of couscous was being served and cautiously decided that maybe we should try it. We should have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Couscous is an important part of the food culture in this part of Sicily. Experience the Cous Cous Fest<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">San Vito Lo Capo&#039;s relationship with couscous is so serious that every year the town organizes <strong>Couscous Party<\/strong>, a large international food festival where chefs from different parts of the world meet around different variations of the dish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The festival includes cooking competitions, tastings, concerts and other events and is usually held in September. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The festival is not only about food but also about the meeting of different cultures around the Mediterranean. It feels quite fitting in Sicily, an island that throughout its history has been shaped by people and influences from many directions. If you travel here in other years, you should of course check the current dates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Upptack_Riserva_dello_Zingaro\"><\/span>6. Discover the Zingaro Reserve<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very close to San Vito Lo Capo is <strong>Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Zingaro<\/strong>, one of Sicily&#039;s most famous natural areas. Here mountains and the Mediterranean meet along a coast with hiking trails and small bathing coves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The classic coastal path runs for about seven kilometers between the area of San Vito Lo Capo in the north and Scopello in the south. There is no road along the coast, which is a large part of the area&#039;s special character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reserve was hit by a major fire in 2025 and partially reopened in 2026 after restoration and safety work. Accessibility and which entrances and trails are open are therefore subject to change. Always check the latest information before planning a hike. It rises behind the beach and is an important part of the landscape around San Vito Lo Capo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those who want to be more active, there are hiking opportunities in the mountains and along the coast. Even if you don&#039;t go on a long hike, the dramatic nature contributes a lot to the experience of the place. So when we got to San Vito Lo Capo we didn&#039;t have much food at home in the camper and decided to have dinner at a restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And for some reason we ordered pizza. It was our first pizza in five years and we weren&#039;t immediately converted. It was thick, heavy and full of cheese and after a few bites we got that familiar feeling that had kept us from eating pizza for so long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We already realized then that maybe we should have chosen couscous instead. With hindsight, we can say: Yes. We really should have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"San_Vito_Lo_Capo_med_husbil\"><\/span>San Vito Lo Capo with a campervan<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We stayed at a campsite just outside San Vito Lo Capo and were able to get into the village and the beach from there. For us it worked well as a base after the night ferry and the rather intense arrival in Sicily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are still campsites and other options for campervan travellers in the area, but we wouldn&#039;t use our 2015 data to choose a location today. We drove past on our way to San Vito Lo Capo and thought something like: <em>Looks wonderful, but we have to move on.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomtravel.se\/en\/2015\/07\/trapani-sicilien\/\">Trapani<\/a><\/strong> is located on the west coast and was one of our next stops on the trip. From there it is also close to the historic mountain town <strong>Erice<\/strong> and to the salt fields along the coast. San Vito Lo Capo is not a big city full of attractions, but a place where the beach, the food, the nightlife and the landscape together are the experience itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the middle of summer, you should be prepared for a lot of people. If you mainly want to hike and discover nature, spring or autumn may be a better option, while September can also offer the Cous Cous Fest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For us, San Vito Lo Capo was the place where we landed after the night ferry and our somewhat chaotic first morning in Sicily. We swam, walked, watched the people and ate a pizza we didn&#039;t like.
