It may not sound like the beginning of a great Sicilian moment, but while we waited out the afternoon shops closed, we started walking through the old town. Its location has historically made the city an important port, and even today the sea is ever-present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old town is relatively compact and is well suited to exploring on foot. We had already seen many old cities in Europe, but Trapani had a slightly different character. Along with Via Torrearsa and Via Garibaldi, it is one of those streets where you can stroll without any particular destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be sure to look up as you walk. Stroll along the Mura di Tramontana<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the finest walks in Trapani runs along <strong>Tramontana Walls<\/strong>, the old city walls on the north side of the old town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here the historic city meets the sea and you can walk with views of the coast. Below the walls is also a small city beach, which makes the combination quite special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is precisely the proximity between the city and the sea that we think is one of Trapani&#039;s great assets. Head out towards Torre di Ligny<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you continue as far west as possible, you will come to <strong>Ligny Tower<\/strong>, an old defensive tower at the very tip of Trapani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tower was built in the 17th century to protect the city against attacks from the sea and today houses a small archaeological museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it&#039;s also the location itself that makes the place worth the walk. Here you are at the far end of the headland with the sea all around and a view of the Egadi Islands. It&#039;s a great place to really understand Trapani&#039;s geographical location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Upplev_hamnen\"><\/span>7. Experience the harbor<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trapani has lived with its port for centuries and it is still an important part of the city. Fishing boats, pleasure boats and ferries mingle here with traffic to the islands off the coast of Sicily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we visited Trapani, a large cruise ship was docked in the harbor right next to the old town. There were obviously plenty of Americans on board, because suddenly there was almost as much English as Italian being spoken on the streets. Boats and ferries also depart from the harbor to, among other places, the Egadi Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_Se_Chiesa_del_Purgatorio_och_mysterierna\"><\/span>8. See the Chiesa del Purgatorio and the mysteries<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of Trapani&#039;s most special churches is <strong>Church of Purgatory<\/strong>. Here are kept the large sculpture groups used during the city&#039;s famous Easter procession, <em>Procession of the Mysteries<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The procession dates back to the 17th century and is one of Sicily&#039;s most famous religious traditions. The large groups of sculptures depict various scenes from the Passion story and are carried through Trapani on Good Friday and Easter Eve. So even if you&#039;re not here during Easter, you can still see the sculptures inside the church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_At_fisk_couscous_och_pesto_alla_trapanese\"><\/span>9. Eat fish, couscous and pesto alla trapanese<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trapani is a great place to discover the culinary culture of western Sicily. The sea naturally leaves its mark on the menus, but there are also clear influences from other parts of the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A local specialty is <strong>fish couscous<\/strong>, couscous with fish and fish broth. We encountered the same tradition in San Vito Lo Capo, where we managed to order pizza instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another right to look out for is <strong>pasta con pesto alla trapanese<\/strong>, where pesto is usually made with tomato, almonds, garlic, basil and olive oil. Watch the sunset over the sea<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trapani is a city where it is hard to forget which direction is west. The old town juts out straight into the sea and in the evening the sun sets over the Mediterranean and the Aegadian Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take a stroll along the western part of the old town or out towards Torre di Ligny as the day draws to a close. We needed internet. Back then, we didn\u2019t travel around the EU with the same easy access to mobile data as we do today, and working internet was essential to be able to work and blog from the camper. So we set off to Trapani in search of Italian SIM cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, we managed to arrive when the shops were closed. After walking through the old town and then waiting a while longer in the camper, the shops finally opened. We each managed to buy a SIM card and were able to continue our trip with internet even while we were free camping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the SIM cards themselves are completely uninteresting. But we are still quite happy that they made us discover Trapani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Trapani_med_husbil\"><\/span>Trapani by motorhome<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We visited Trapani by camper van as part of our longer trip around Sicily. The old town itself is best explored on foot, and with a larger vehicle there is no point in trying to drive far into the narrower streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parking regulations and overnight accommodation options change over time, so check current options if you are coming by motorhome. Here, shallow salt ponds spread along the coast, along with white salt mounds and old windmills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Salt has been produced in the area for centuries and still is. The ponds, mills and salt mounds created a landscape that was unlike anything else we had seen in Sicily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the evening we stopped with the camper with a view of the salt ponds. After the somewhat chaotic start in Sicily, something started to change. From the outskirts of Trapani, a cable car goes up to Erice and during the journey, in clear weather, you get a fantastic view of Trapani, the salt fields, the coast and the Egadi Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Up in Erice, a completely different environment awaits with cobbled alleys, churches, city walls and Castello di Venere, the Castle of Venus, on the site of a much older sanctuary. Erice is such a strong destination that it actually deserves a visit of its own rather than a quick detour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Utflykt_till_Egadiska_oarna\"><\/span>Excursion to the Aegadian Islands<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Trapani you can also take a boat to <strong>Egadi Islands<\/strong>, the Egadi Islands. The archipelago consists mainly of Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo and is located just off the west coast of Sicily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Favignana<\/strong> is the largest and most visited island and is well suited for those who want to combine swimming coves with cycling and small town life. <strong>Levanzo<\/strong> is considerably smaller and quieter, while <strong>Marettimo<\/strong> is located at the farthest end and attracts with dramatic nature, hiking and a slower pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is possible to make day trips from Trapani, but the islands are also destinations where you can stay longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ar_Trapani_vart_ett_besok\"><\/span>Is Trapani worth a visit?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, we think so. Trapani may easily be overshadowed by more famous Sicilian cities like Palermo, Catania and Syracuse, but its seaside location and grand old town centre make the city well worth a stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trapani is also an excellent base for discovering western Sicily. Erice is located on the mountain above the city, the Egadi Islands await out in the sea and to the south the strange salt landscape begins towards Marsala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We came here to buy a SIM card.
