We came from Voss, where we had spotted two spectacular waterfalls, and now a fjord landscape opened up with green-blue water, narrow roads, tunnels and the occasional transition from fjord to high class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hardangerfjord is known for its beautiful landscape with high mountains, dramatic waterfalls and long fjord arms, but also for its fruit orchards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, we only had time to experience a small part of Hardanger. The road leads through the dramatic M\u00e5b\u00f8dalen and on through a number of tunnels on the way up to Hardangervidda. This is a major attraction, which is noticeable in the large parking areas, the large service building with toilets and all the modern and well-maintained trails and viewing platforms around the attraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The waterfall has a drop height of 182 meters. Toilets are available.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Time of the visit:<\/strong> Allow at least half an hour and preferably up to 1.5 hours to walk around the area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shoes and clothes:<\/strong> Please bring sturdy walking shoes or boots and clothing for the weather.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Best time to visit:<\/strong> The summer months are the easiest time to visit. Parts of the facility are closed in the winter due to snow and ice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Price to visit:<\/strong> There is no cost to visit V\u00f8ringsfossen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vidare_upp_pa_Hardangervidda\"><\/span>Further up on Hardangervidda<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visit to V\u00f8ringsfossen was the last one we did together with Peter&#039;s son Billie and his girlfriend Amy. After this it was time for them to head towards Sweden, by car, while we would continue the adventure in Norway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We decided to go up to Hardangervidda for one last night together, before heading home. During the afternoon many cars passed by, but later in the evening it became calm and quiet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did you know that Hardangervidda is Europe&#039;s largest high mountain plateau? Some experiences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Campsites, motorhome pitches and free camping options<\/strong> There is plenty of space, but please note that it can get busy during high season. Please arrive fairly early in the afternoon or book in advance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Service locations<\/strong> for emptying, water filling etc. you can easily find via for example <a href=\"https:\/\/nortrip.no\/se\/butik\/?tag_ref=freedomtravel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Nortrip app<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gas stations and grocery stores<\/strong> can be found in many places, but keep in mind that many grocery stores are closed on Sundays.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>LPG (Fixed Tank Gasoline) <\/strong>can only be refueled at a few places in the area, so it is a good idea to plan well in advance. We refueled at LPG Voss. There is everything from small fjord villages and fruit orchards to glaciers, waterfalls and spectacular hikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some places and experiences to check out are: <strong>Ulvik<\/strong>, a beautifully situated village at the far end of the Ulvikafjord, and <strong>Loft house<\/strong>, which is known for its fruit orchards and fine views of the fjord. Apples, pears, plums and cherries are grown in Hardanger, and the landscape is especially popular to visit during the spring blossoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further south lies <strong>Odd<\/strong>, which is a good starting point for several nature experiences. From here, many people continue on to <strong>Trolltongue<\/strong>, the spectacular rock formation that juts out about 700 meters above Lake Ringedalsvatnet. The hike there is long and demanding, requiring both time and the right equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another great nature experience is <strong>Folgefonna<\/strong>, Norway&#039;s third largest glacier. Parts of the glacier and the surrounding landscape are part of Folgefonna National Park and there are several hiking opportunities here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also plenty of waterfalls around the Hardangerfjord. The roads are narrow and winding in places and there are plenty of tunnels, but the larger roads are normally fine for motorhomes. Expect the drive to often take longer than the distance on the map suggests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is it free to visit V\u00f8ringsfossen?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, it is free to visit V\u00f8ringsfossen and the viewpoints at Fossli. There are several viewing platforms and walkways, as well as the spectacular footbridge over the ravine. Parking is available adjacent to the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How far is it from Eidfjord to V\u00f8ringsfossen?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is about 20 kilometers from Eidfjord to V\u00f8ringsfossen and the drive takes about 25\u201330 minutes. The road goes up through the dramatic M\u00e5b\u00f8dalen valley and rises from the fjord towards Hardangervidda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you stay overnight in a campervan on Hardangervidda?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are campsites and other opportunities for overnight stays with a campervan in and around Hardangervidda. Free camping may also be possible where there are no local prohibitions and where you can park without obstructing traffic or damaging the nature. Keep in mind that the right of public access does not mean that you can drive or park anywhere in the terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When is the best time to visit the Hardangerfjord?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May to September is the most popular time to visit the Hardangerfjord. In spring, the fruit trees bloom and the waterfalls are often particularly impressive, while summer offers long days and great hiking opportunities. On the Hardangervidda plateau, however, the weather can be chilly and change quickly even in the middle of summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How many days do you need at the Hardangerfjord?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is possible to get a nice experience of the Hardangerfjord in a couple of days, but the area is large and those who want to visit several parts of the fjord can easily set aside three to five days or more.
