Even though it was November, we were far from alone. The tours start on time and anyone arriving late may miss their visit. The tour itself takes about 30 minutes. From the village you can instead get up in three ways: on foot, by bus or by horse-drawn carriage. We chose the bus, which is a convenient option when you want to save your legs for the actual visit and walks around the castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bus and horse-drawn carriage services can be affected by weather and road conditions, so it is wise to check what is available on the day. Also, remember to allow plenty of time between parking and your booked entrance time. From here you can see the whole of Neuschwanstein with mountains and landscapes in the background \u2013 exactly the view that appears on countless postcards and pictures from Bavaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bridge is named after Ludwig II&#039;s mother Marie. An earlier wooden bridge existed here during the reign of King Maximilian II, and Ludwig II later had it replaced with an iron structure. Marienbr\u00fccke is normally accessible, but can be closed due to snow and ice, for example. class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s easy to think that Neuschwanstein is primarily meant to be seen from the outside. On the contrary, we thought it was well worth going inside. The interior is stunning, with paintings, carved woodwork, magnificent furniture and enormous chandeliers. The rooms feel more like the set of an opera or a fairy tale than a regular royal residence \u2013 which is actually quite close to the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ludwig II was fascinated by medieval knightly tales, Christian legends and Richard Wagner&#039;s operas. This is evident everywhere in the castle. Among the most impressive rooms are the throne room and the singer&#039;s hall. Ludwig had grown up at Hohenschwangau and was fascinated by knights, legends, art and music from an early age. Above all, he admired the composer Richard Wagner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1868, Ludwig wrote to Wagner about his plans to rebuild the old castle ruins above Hohenschwangau in the style of an old German knight&#039;s castle. The inspiration came, among other things, from the Wartburg in Thuringia, which Ludwig had visited the year before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Neuschwanstein was not intended to be a historically accurate reconstruction. Photo: Pixabay.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Neuschwanstein_borjade_byggas_1869\"><\/span>Neuschwanstein construction began in 1869<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The foundation stone of the palace was laid on 5 September 1869. The architect Eduard Riedel designed the building based on Ludwig&#039;s ideas and sketches by the theatre and stage painter Christian Jank. Later, Georg Dollmann and Julius Hofmann took over parts of the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is precisely the mix of architecture and theater that makes Neuschwanstein so special. The castle was not just a building \u2013 it was to be a stage for Ludwig&#039;s fantasy world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The construction turned out to be considerably more complicated and time-consuming than the king had imagined. It had running water and hot-air heating, and the castle&#039;s kitchen was modern for its time. Large windows were set in industrially manufactured steel frames, and the enormous throne room used advanced iron construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#039;s a funny contrast: Louis wanted to live in a romantic medieval fantasy world \u2013 but he also wanted to have the most modern comforts of his time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Neuschwanstein_blev_aldrig_fardigbyggt\"><\/span>Neuschwanstein was never completed.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ludwig II never saw Neuschwanstein completed. When he died in 1886, large parts of the castle were still under construction and many of his plans were never realized. The king&#039;s construction projects had become increasingly expensive and his debts were growing. In 1886, he was declared mentally ill and unfit to rule by a doctor. On June 12, he was arrested at Neuschwanstein and taken to Berg Castle on Lake Starnberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The very next day, Ludwig and psychiatrist Bernhard von Gudden were found dead in Lake Starnberg. Exactly what happened has never been clarified and the king&#039;s death has given rise to many theories. Just a few weeks later, Neuschwanstein was opened to paying visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Neuschwanstein_blev_varldsarv_2025\"><\/span>Neuschwanstein became a World Heritage Site in 2025<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2025, Neuschwanstein received another status mark when the castle was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List along with Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee and K\u00f6nigshaus am Schachen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together, the buildings represent the fantasy worlds of Ludwig II and the unusual blend of 19th-century architecture, art, theater, and modern technology. There are clear similarities and Walt Disney visited Neuschwanstein during a trip to Europe before Disneyland opened. Even though we visited the castle in November, we were met with loads of visitors. But it was also one of those attractions where we afterwards understood why everyone came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The setting is stunning, the view from the mountains is magnificent and the castle itself is even more special inside than we had imagined. Check current operating status before visiting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Photography:<\/strong> Allowed outdoors for private use, but not inside the castle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Marienbr\u00fccke:<\/strong> Check the current status, especially in winter when the bridge may be closed due to snow and ice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hohenschwangau_ligger_nedanfor_Neuschwanstein\"><\/span>Hohenschwangau is located below Neuschwanstein<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have plenty of time, you can also visit <em>Hohenschwangau,<\/em> the castle where Ludwig II grew up. As tickets often sell out, advance booking is recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you enter Neuschwanstein without a guide?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No. The interior of the castle can only be visited as part of a guided tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How long does the visit to Neuschwanstein take?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The actual tour inside the castle takes about 30 minutes, but allow considerably more time for the entire visit. You will be making your way from the parking lot up to the castle and will probably also want to visit the Marienbr\u00fccke and take photos of the surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you drive a car or camper to Neuschwanstein?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No. The roads up to the castle are closed to normal traffic. Cars and campers are parked down in Hohenschwangau. He started using the completed gatehouse earlier and was able to live in the completed rooms in the main building for the first time in 1884. He died in 1886 and never got to see the castle completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Neuschwanstein a real medieval castle?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No. Despite its medieval appearance, Neuschwanstein only began construction in 1869. It is a romantic 19th-century castle inspired by medieval knights&#039; castles, legends, and fairy tale worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Neuschwanstein a World Heritage Site?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.
