During our days on the island we managed to try local specialties like mastelo, revithadas, chickpea balls and melopita, find some really charming restaurants and visit potters who still keep the old Since several meals were included in the itinerary of our trip, which was partly arranged in collaboration with a local PR agency, we ate at the same restaurants several times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first we thought it was a bit of a shame not to have time to discover more different restaurants. In retrospect we also saw the charm of the arrangement. We often experienced the food on Sifnos as unartificial and genuine. Not necessarily fancy or trendy \u2013 just well-cooked, generous and very tasty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Yalos_Sifnos_%E2%80%93_frukost_med_utsikt_over_havet\"><\/span>Yalos Sifnos \u2013 breakfast with a sea view<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We stayed in Platis Gialos and every morning we walked to Yalos Sifnos for breakfast. Of course, this meant that we didn&#039;t have time to try as many restaurants on the island, but instead this place almost became our little regular spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cyclades is not the type of restaurant that feels fancy or pretentious. Quite the opposite. It may not look that spectacular on the plate \u2013 but oh so delicious! The eggplant becomes very soft and the flavors are concentrated. Chickpeas, onions and olive oil are cooked very slowly, traditionally in a special ceramic pot in a wood-fired oven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Revithada has a strong connection to the Sunday meal. Mastelo is not just the name of the dish \u2013 it\u2019s also the name of the traditional ceramic vessel in which it\u2019s cooked. And the more we learned about the food on Sifnos, the clearer it became that the island\u2019s food culture and ceramic tradition are closely intertwined. No, unfortunately. Of course, there was nothing strange about it and we didn&#039;t think anything more about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the next evening we had a surprise. The owner had gone and bought melopita from another place \u2013 just because we had asked for it! So nicely done!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And how lucky she was that she did. The soft and juicy pie, traditionally made with cream cheese, honey and eggs, was amazingly delicious. A little on the cheesecake side, but still something completely unique. Here the setting is a big part of the experience. Among other things, Sifnos produces fresh mizithra, a soft cheese made from goat or sheep milk. The salad was fantastic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this we took in <strong>revithokeftedes<\/strong>, chickpea balls. And here the chickpeas got their revenge! Chickpea stew hadn&#039;t really become our thing, but the crispy chickpea balls were a completely different story. At Loumidis Family Farm, we first got to meet the farm&#039;s wonderfully tame and sociable animals and then settled down to a lunch where the ingredients basically came from the farm itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the table were stuffed peppers, vine leaf dolma, cheeses, olives, fava beans, bread and grapes. For dessert we had yogurt with the farm&#039;s own honey. We ended up at 3Gyro, which felt a bit more modern and international than several of the restaurants we had visited before. We sat outside with a view of the beach and started with cheese balls and zucchini balls with tzatziki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both varieties were made at the restaurant and the cheese balls in particular were insanely good. Sifnos, we began to realize that food and ceramics are almost inseparable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The island&#039;s potters have been making vessels for people&#039;s everyday lives for generations \u2013 and different vessels have had different functions in the kitchen. Some of Sifnos&#039; most famous dishes are still traditionally prepared in ceramics developed specifically for the purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To understand the food culture on Sifnos, you almost also need to understand a little about the ceramics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Keramik_pa_Sifnos_%E2%80%93_en_levande_tradition\"><\/span>Ceramics at Sifnos \u2013 a living tradition<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sifnos has a very long ceramic tradition, and an important explanation lies beneath the feet of the island&#039;s inhabitants: here there is clay with refractory properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This made it possible to produce robust vessels that could withstand high temperatures and could be used for cooking. From the beginning, ceramics were primarily a matter of practical objects \u2013 vessels for cooking, storing and serving food and drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, the potters of Sifnos became known far beyond the island. During the 19th and 20th centuries in particular, Sifnos potters established themselves in many other places in Greece and the eastern Mediterranean. The family-run business combines two of the island&#039;s strong traditions: food and pottery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We saw different types of ceramic vessels and learned how their design is related to their use. One vessel is used for the slow-cooked chickpea stew revithad, another for mastelo, and other shapes have their own special functions. It was fascinating to realize that the shapes are not just decorative. They have been developed for a purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who want to delve deeper than we did can book activities with Narlis, including cooking and pottery. class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we later had a rental car on Sifnos, we decided to visit another potter: Apostolidis. It was an even more in-depth encounter with the craft. We got to look into the workshop, see how the pottery was turned and hear stories about how the craft on Sifnos has developed through the generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Refractory clay gave the ceramics special properties<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An important prerequisite for ceramics on Sifnos is the fireproof, or refractory, clay. The knowledge spread to other Greek islands and the Greek mainland, among other places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The potters of Sifnos gained such a good reputation that the word <strong>sifnius<\/strong>, i.e. someone from Sifnos, in some places came to be associated with the profession of potter itself. This says a lot about the importance of the craft to the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The vessel that only the masters can make<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Apostolidis we also got to see one of the more advanced traditional vessels. It has a rounded bottom, a shape that makes it possible to use the vessel over an open fire. But the shape also makes it difficult to manufacture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were told that the vessel must be turned in a special way, upside down, so that the bottom can be sealed last. Visitors didn\u2019t necessarily need large vessels to cook in \u2013 they wanted something beautiful to take home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And inspiration was everywhere on the island. A detail that is typical of Sifnos are the decorative chimneys, <strong>flaroy<\/strong>, which can be found in many different forms on the whitewashed houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apostolidis said that visitors started asking about the chimneys. The potters therefore started making smaller versions of the shapes, including lanterns where you can put a candle. Some specialties are particularly fun to look out for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Revithada<\/strong> \u2013 traditional slow-cooked chickpea stew, often associated with the Sunday meal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Revithokeftedes<\/strong> \u2013 fried chickpea balls and one of our personal favorites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mastelo<\/strong> \u2013 slow-cooked lamb or goat, traditionally cooked in a ceramic vessel of the same name.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Melopita<\/strong> \u2013 soft honey pie with cream cheese, eggs and honey. Very tasty!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mizithra<\/strong> \u2013 fresh, soft cheese that can appear in salads, among other things.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Manoura<\/strong> \u2013 a more mature and flavorful local cheese.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Caper<\/strong> \u2013 grows on Sifnos and is used in various local dishes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Thyme honey<\/strong> \u2013 tasty and aromatic honey from the island&#039;s thyme, good with yogurt and cheese, for example, and an important ingredient in melopita. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Amygdalota<\/strong> \u2013 traditional almond sweets made from ground almonds and sugar, among other things. Nikolaos Tselementes, one of the most influential figures in modern Greek cooking, had his roots on Sifnos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His cookbooks had such a huge impact that the surname Tselementes eventually began to be used as a colloquial word for cookbook in Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every year, a gastronomy festival is organized on Sifnos that bears his name and brings together food traditions from the Cycladic islands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vara_intryck_av_maten_och_keramiken_pa_Sifnos\"><\/span>Our impressions of the food and ceramics on Sifnos<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we think back to the food on Sifnos, it&#039;s perhaps not any single dish that lingers most. It&#039;s the feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The food was often simple in the best possible way: authentic, well-cooked and made with heart. We remember the owner who found melopita for us, the lunch with our feet in the sand, the creamy yogurt for breakfast and all the small dishes that came to the table night after night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then there&#039;s the ceramics. What at first might look like beautiful bowls and pots in souvenir shops turned out to be a tradition that is closely intertwined with people&#039;s everyday lives and the island&#039;s food culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps that is precisely why food and ceramics go so well together on Sifnos.
