Cannes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00cele Sainte-Marguerite is the largest of <strong>L\u00e9rins Islands<\/strong>, \u00celes de L\u00e9rins, located just outside Cannes on the French Riviera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The archipelago consists primarily of the two larger islands <strong>Sainte-Marguerite<\/strong> and <strong>Saint-Honorat<\/strong>, both of which can be visited by boat. The boat ride itself is part of the experience. On Sainte-Marguerite you are greeted by forest, paths, cliffs and sea instead of hotels, shopping streets and traffic. Around the island lay one luxury yacht after another. And the people on board were apparently not content with just lying on deck and looking out over the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among other things, we saw a yacht with <strong>water slide<\/strong>, an inflatable <strong>winged horse<\/strong> and someone who drove <strong>flyboard<\/strong> over the water. A helicopter also landed on one of the boats. It made our egg sandwich feel a little less extravagant. The fortress was developed in the 17th century and later used as a prison. Its most famous prisoner is the mysterious <strong>the man with the iron mask<\/strong>, whose identity is still unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was imprisoned at Sainte-Marguerite between 1687 and 1698 before being taken to the Bastille in Paris. The story has given rise to numerous theories and was later made famous, not least through Alexandre Dumas&#039;s story of the man in the iron mask. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peter decided to visit the fort. I looked at the temperature: 35 degrees. I decided to <strong>dare to refuse bail<\/strong>. The museum&#039;s collections also include archaeological finds from the area, including objects from ancient shipwrecks. On <strong>Grand Jardin Cemetery<\/strong> French soldiers are buried there who were cared for at Sainte-Marguerite after the Crimean War in the 19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearby is also a cemetery for North African soldiers who were stationed on the island during World War II. If you mainly want to walk, swim and have lunch, you can easily spend most of the day here. Add time if you also want to visit the Fort Royal and the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is also possible to make a shorter visit of a few hours, but we think part of the point of the island is not having to stress. Feel free to bring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>water, especially on hot days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>swimwear and possibly swimming shoes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sun protection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>good shoes if you want to hike<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>something to eat if you don&#039;t plan on visiting the restaurants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And maybe spare sandals... The last tip is based on experience.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sainte-Marguerite_eller_Saint-Honorat\"><\/span>Sainte-Marguerite or Saint-Honorat?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two larger L\u00e9rins Islands offer slightly different experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sainte-Marguerite<\/strong> is the largest and is well suited for those who want to combine hiking, swimming, nature and history around Fort Royal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Saint-Honorat<\/strong> is smaller and above all known for its monastery and the long monastic tradition on the island. There is still a Cistercian monastery there and the monks produce wine, among other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We chose Sainte-Marguerite and thought it was a perfect contrast to Cannes. Above all, we like the contrast. In Cannes, you can find the Croisette, the film festival, the luxury yachts, the shopping and the restaurants. Just a short boat ride away, you can instead walk through the forest, swim from cliffs and small coves and discover a centuries-old fortress. But apparently you can&#039;t completely avoid the luxury yachts. They came with you to the island...<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For us, Sainte-Marguerite was one of the best excursions we&#039;ve done from Cannes, despite 35 degree heat and a sandal that gave up.
