Here, turquoise water, sunken buildings and the remains of a large prison area meet. When we visited Rummu, the place was still quite raw and unregulated. Today, it is a developed tourist destination where you can swim, dive, paddle, visit the prison museum \u2013 and even spend the night in a camper van.<\/p><div class=\"sharethis-buttons\"><div The area was flooded and buildings, machinery and other equipment were partially or completely submerged. Adjacent to the quarry were the prisons Rummu and Murru, and prisoners were used for the hard work in the quarry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Murru Prison continued to be used long after the fall of the Soviet Union and was only closed in 2012. There were activities and a small bar, but the feel was much more improvised. The clear, turquoise water combined with the ruins and light limestone create an almost surreal setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we were here, it was a warm summer day and the beach was full of bathers. In the summer there is also an inflatable water park. Here, visitors can walk through cells, punishment areas, workrooms and other parts of the facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can explore the area on your own or follow an audio guide through about twenty stops. It is also possible to book a guided tour, where former prison staff, among others, will tell you about life at Murru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Aktiviteter_vid_Rummu_stenbrott\"><\/span>Activities at Rummu quarry<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today there are many more activities than when we were here. In addition to swimming, snorkeling and diving, you can paddle SUP, rent a rowboat or pedal boat and play disc golf. Today it is possible to stay overnight in the area instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rummu has a special caravan park with spaces for motorhomes and caravans as well as an area for tents. The combination of turquoise water, sunken ruins, and dark history makes the place both fascinating and a little hard to take in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we were here, Rummu was still a much more unregulated excursion destination than it is today. We climbed the mound, Peter snorkeled, we lay on the beach and watched other visitors swim and explore the ruins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, the place has changed, but perhaps in a rather good way. By car, the journey takes about 40\u201350 minutes from Tallinn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Rummu Quarry?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rummu is a former limestone quarry where prisoners from nearby prisons were used as labor. When mining ceased and groundwater pumping stopped, the quarry filled with water. Today, there is a turquoise lake here with buildings and other remains below the water surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you swim in Rummu quarry?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, you can swim at Rummu Quarry. There is currently a beach here and various water activities are also offered during the summer. Swimming is at your own risk and there are no lifeguards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you dive and snorkel in Rummu?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes. The clear water and sunken buildings have made Rummu popular, especially for diving. You can also snorkel, but be aware that there are building parts and other objects under the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you visit the old prison in Rummu?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes. The former Murru Prison is now open as a museum. Here you can see cells, workrooms and other parts of the old prison complex. From the top you get a nice view of the turquoise water and the old prison area. The hike is at your own risk and parts of the area are steep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you stay overnight with a camper at Rummu?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes. At Rummu there is currently a caravan park for motorhomes and caravans as well as the possibility of camping. There are toilets, showers, drinking water and electricity available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How long do you need at Rummu?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allow at least a couple of hours if you want to see the quarry and walk around the area. If you also want to visit the prison museum, swim or do some water activity, you can easily spend half or a full day here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Rummu Quarry worth a visit?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, we definitely think so. Rummu combines an unusual and photogenic setting with a dark and interesting history.
