We got to experience the area from the water when we sailed from \u015awinouj\u015bcie to Szczecin \u2013 a journey of around seven hours through canals and open water, accompanied by a whole retinue Poland and Germany<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oder Lagoon, in Polish <em>Szczecin Lake<\/em> and in German <em>Szczecin Lagoon<\/em>, is a large area of brackish water on the border between Poland and Germany. The lagoon lies within the islands of Usedom and Wolin and is thus separated from the Baltic Sea. However, a much deeper waterway runs through the area, which allows large ships to travel between the Baltic Sea and the port of Szczecin. For us, the lagoon became above all an exciting waterway between \u015awinouj\u015bcie and Szczecin \u2013 and an area that we had barely heard of before.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t\t<div \n\t\t\tclass=\"wp-block-uagb-google-map uagb-google-map__wrap uagb-block-907959c1\"\n\t\t\tstyle=\"\" >\n\t\t\t\t<embed\n\t\t\t\t\tclass=\"uagb-google-map__iframe\"\n\t\t\t\t\ttitle=\"Google Map for \"\n\t\t\t\t\tsrc=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=szczecin%20lagoon&#038;z=8&#038;hl=en&#038;t=m&#038;output=embed&#038;iwloc=near\"\n\t\t\t\t\twidth=\"640\"\n\t\t\t\t\theight=\"300\"\n\t\t\t\t\tloading=\"lazy\"\n\t\t\t\t><\/embed>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fran_Ostersjon_till_Szczecin\"><\/span>From the Baltic Sea to Szczecin<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Szczecin is located quite a distance from the Baltic Sea coast, the city is an important port city with connections to the sea. From the Baltic Sea, the shipping route enters at \u015awinouj\u015bcie and continues south through the \u015awina and Piast Canal to the Oder Lagoon. We left the Baltic coast at \u015awinouj\u015bcie and traveled through narrower waters and canals before the landscape opened up over the Oder Lagoon. The canal was originally called <em>Kaiserfahrt<\/em> and was opened in 1880. The aim was to create a shorter and safer waterway between \u015awinouj\u015bcie and Szczecin and avoid the older, more difficult route through the shallow and winding waters of \u015awina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The construction of the canal also had an interesting geographical consequence. When digging through Uznam, part of the island was cut off and Karsib\u00f3r became its own island.
