The old Hanseatic city on the Baltic Sea offers colorful historic houses, impressive brick churches, one of Germany&#039;s oldest universities and over 160 years of Swedish history. The famous artist Caspar David Friedrich was also born here. After the Thirty Years&#039; War, the city became part of <strong>Swedish Pomerania<\/strong>, and Greifswald was under Swedish rule until 1815. This means that the city belonged to Sweden for more than 160 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Swedish period left its mark on both administration, education and culture. Not least the history of the university became closely intertwined with Sweden. Behind its founding was, among others, the city&#039;s mayor, Heinrich Rubenow, who also became the university&#039;s first rector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The university is still an important part of Greifswald and contributes to giving the relatively small town a distinct student character. Contacts across the Baltic Sea are also still alive. His dramatic and atmospheric landscapes have made him one of the most famous artists of German Romanticism. The nature of Pomerania and around the Baltic Sea continued to inspire him long after he left his hometown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greifswald has several places connected to the artist and his life. For art lovers, it is almost possible to take your own little Caspar David Friedrich walk through the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Besok_Pommersches_Landesmuseum\"><\/span>7. Visit the Pommersches Landesmuseum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to understand the history of both Greifswald and Pomerania, <strong>Pomeranian National Museum<\/strong> one of the city&#039;s most important museums. It tells the story of around 14,000 years of Pomeranian history \u2013 from the geological development of the region and the medieval Hanseatic League to the Swedish era and further into modern history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a few years now, there has also been <strong>Gallery of Romance<\/strong>, a permanent exhibition with Caspar David Friedrich at its center. It displays original works and tells about both the artist and the landscape that inspired him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, we didn&#039;t have time to visit the museum when we were in Greifswald. Stroll along Ryck and Museumshafen<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the nicest parts of Greifswald is found down by the water. The Ryck River runs through the city, connecting Greifswald to the Baltic Sea, and just a short walk from the square is the city&#039;s large museum harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Museum Harbor Greifswald<\/strong> is actually Germany&#039;s largest museum port, with over 50 historic ships moored along the Ryck. Here you can find old schooners, tugboats and other traditional vessels, and some of the boats are still used for sailing trips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#039;s a nice area to walk in and the maritime environment is a lovely contrast to the churches and historic houses in the old town. Eat fish by the water<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The harbor is also a good area when hunger sets in. Here you can buy classic <em>Fish roll<\/em> \u2013 bread with, for example, herring or other fish \u2013 and there are restaurants by the water. We had dinner on a restaurant boat and got a round table at the back of the boat. Take a trip to Wieck and Eldena<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to continue along the water, you can continue from Museumshafen to the old fishing village. <strong>Wieck<\/strong>, about five kilometers from the center of Greifswald. A nice walking and cycling path follows Ryck all the way out to the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wieck is located where the Ryck meets the Greifswalder Bodden and still has the distinct character of an old fishing village, with low houses, a maritime environment and a historic wooden drawbridge from 1887.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right next door are the ruins of <strong>Eldena Monastery<\/strong>. The old Cistercian monastery became world famous through Caspar David Friedrich, who used the ruins as motifs in several of his paintings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Greifswald_med_bat\"><\/span>Greifswald by boat<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For us, Greifswald was a bit special because we arrived by sailboat. From Greifswalder Bodden you can follow Ryck towards the city and dock relatively close to the center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#039;s an unusual and very pleasant way to get to Greifswald. A central option is <strong>Caravan Camping Lenten<\/strong> at the Museumshafen, on Marienstra\u00dfe 9. The parking lot is open all year round and has electricity, fresh water, greywater disposal and a toilet, as well as showers and toilets. From here it is easy to walk further towards the old town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you would rather stay at a traditional campsite, there is <strong>Camping an der D\u00e4nischen Wiek<\/strong> in Eldena, about five kilometers from the center of Greifswald.
