Here you will find a beautiful 17th-century castle, a historic park, a runestone, a royal dog grave and several traces of Sweden&#039;s military history. For us, Karlberg is also part of everyday life - we live on a houseboat in Pampas marina nearby and often walk past.<\/p><div class=\"sharethis-buttons\"><div class=\"st-custom-button\" Peter grew up on Karlbergsv\u00e4gen and lived there from the time he was born until he was 12. Karlberg Castle looks different all the time! In the summer it is framed by greenery, in the fall by colorful leaves and sometimes the snow lies white over the area in the winter. We walk along the water and past Karlberg Castle, and when we have passed the castle we turn into the park and head back towards Pampas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the time we walk just to get some exercise and get outside for a while, but sometimes we&#039;ve also jogged the same distance. Gradually, we began to discover all the historical details scattered among the trees. Here are some of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Charles XII oak<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the park is the old so-called Karl XII oak. It was erected during the Viking Age and the inscription tells of a stone that Anund and Torgils had erected after \u00c5sg\u00f6t. Pompe was the name of Charles XII&#039;s dog \u2013 or rather dogs. The king is said to have had three dogs, all named Pompe. The first died on Karlberg in 1699 and was buried here. It was built on a raised terrace in the castle park and was originally called Neptunii Temple. Pampas marina is located west of Karlberg Castle, at the mouth of the Karlberg Canal towards Lake Ulvsunda. The name Pampas was used long before today&#039;s marina existed and was a name for the open training area at Karlberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name is believed to have originated among the cadets, who called the training field Pampas \u2013 likely in allusion to the large open pampas plains in South America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#039;s a bit funny to think about when we walk home from Karlberg. The address of the Karlberg Military Academy is Karlbergs slottsv\u00e4g 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Karlberg Castle Park open to the public?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes. The area is fenced and the gates are normally open every day from 6 am to 10 pm. At that time, the park and the exercise tracks are available to the public for exercise and recreation. Since Karlberg is a military area, it can also be closed during the day when operations require it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you visit Karlberg Castle?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No, not as a regular tourist. The castle is a workplace and military protected object and the public does not have access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you get to Karlberg Castle Park?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is easy to walk here from, for example, Vasastan or Kungsholmen. If you are coming by public transport, there are several options in the area, and it is wise to check the current route before your visit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bra_att_veta_under_2026\"><\/span>Good to know in 2026<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Extensive construction and renovation work is currently underway in the Karlberg area. Among other things, a new dining hall is being built while older buildings are being renovated. The palace&#039;s facade and windows are also being renovated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the construction period, walkways may be rerouted and parts of the area may be closed. The Fortifications Agency states that the work will continue in the coming years.
