Why Pride festivals?

Pride festivals are organised every year around the world to celebrate the pride of the LGBTQ+ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and others). The first ever Pride parades were held on 27-28 June 1970 in Chicago. The dates were chosen in part to commemorate the Stonewall Rebellion a year earlier - a series of violent demonstrations against a police raid on a New York City bar.

Pride festivals in Europe

Today, festivals have spread all over the world, sometimes with week-long programmes of exhibitions, workshops, debates and concerts. The highlight is the Pride parade, which is usually colourful and attracts a large crowd.

We have seen the parades in Gothenburg and Stockholm, but it would be great to see some of the parades in other European cities! The atmosphere is great and the cities are filled with happy, friendly and open-minded people. We have listed some of the biggest and most interesting festivals and parades in Europe this year. Perhaps it's time for you to check out one of them this year? You can read more about them in this calendar.

Europride 2019 in Vienna

Every year, one of all Pride festivals in Europe is awarded the title of 'Europride' by the European Pride Organisers' Association (EPOA). Sweden has actually held the title of Europride three times, in 1998, 2008 and 2018.

This year, Vienna, Austria, holds the title of Europride, and this year's theme is 'Visions of Pride'. The festival takes place from 1-16 June, and over a million people are expected to take part in the event. We have always thought of Austria as a relatively conservative country, especially when it comes to gender roles, but we reckon they will open up during these days!
