Why travel to Spain?

Spain has an incredibly long Mediterranean coastline, many long sandy beaches and a great climate. There are many great cities in Spain, not only Barcelona but also Seville, Valencia and Tarragona, for example. They are full of historical attractions, such as churches, the Alhambra and Roman remains.

Canary Islands

The Canary Islands consist of several different islands, including Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote. The islands are well suited to sunbathing and swimming in the winter, as the climate is pleasant and flights are not too far away.

Food in Spain

  • Food culture: Spanish cuisine is Mediterranean and uses olive oil, fresh vegetables, olives and spices such as garlic, onions, peppers and fresh herbs.
  • In a restaurant: In tourist resorts it is common to serve a 'set menu' of three courses, i.e. starter, main course and dessert for a set price.
  • Dishes: Paella is made from rice which is then mixed with, for example, seafood or chicken and vegetables, often flavoured with saffron. Gazpacho is a soup served cold, including tomato, cucumber, onion and garlic. Fish and shellfish are also common on the coast, including the fish dorada (seabream). Boquerones are small fish that are fried whole in oil and are also very tasty.
  • Tapas: Tapas are popular savoury dishes such as small casseroles, sausages, croquettes, tortilla (potato omelette), fried calamari, gambas al ajillo (prawns in garlic oil), anchovies, salads, Spanish cheeses, etc.
  • Pintxos: In the Basque Country, people eat pintxos (pinchos) instead of tapas. Pintxos are also small dishes, but are more often small pieces of bread with a tasty topping and a toothpick right through it.
  • Sweets: Churros is a Spanish pastry often sold in stalls at markets. A churro consists of deep-fried dough and is sometimes served with chocolate sauce, vanilla cream or caramel sauce, known as dulce de leche.

Drinks in Spain

  • Wine: Spain is the third largest producer of wine in the world. The most famous district is Rioja, which produces the delicious red Rioja wines.
  • Cava: Spain is also known for the white sparkling wine called cava, which is produced in Catalonia, among other places. The capital of Cava is located southwest of Barcelona and is called Sant Sadurni d'Aniola, where 95 % of all Cava is produced. The three main grapes for Cava are Parellada, Xarel.lo and Macabeo.
  • Oil: "Una cerveza por favor!" Beer is called 'cerveza' in Spanish and the most common bottled beers are San Miguel and Cruzcampo.

Travelling to Spain

  • Flight: There are direct flights from Sweden to several destinations in Spain, including Malaga, Barcelona, Alicante, Madrid and also to the Canary Islands. The flight time from Stockholm to mainland Spain is around 4 hours, while the flight time to the Canary Islands is around 6 hours.
  • Car: It is also possible to travel to Spain by car. The driving time from Stockholm to Madrid is about 33 hours (313 miles), calculated in pure driving time.
