  • Residents: 82,800 million (2017)
  • Currency: Euro
  • Price mode: It is cheaper than Sweden
  • El: Same as Sweden
  • Water: Drinking beard
  • Religion: Christianity
  • Flag: The colours of the flag are black, red and gold.

Driving to Germany

  • Gothenburg-Kiel with Stena Line (ferry) takes 14 h 30 min.
  • Trelleborg-Rostock by Stena Line or TT-Line takes between 6 and 7 hours.
  • Trelleborg-Sassnitz with Stena Line or TT-Line takes just over 4 hours.

Roads and driving in Germany

  • Roads: On the Autobahn, speeds are much higher than we are used to in Sweden, and sometimes there are long queues known as 'stau'.
  • Road tolls: For most people, driving on German roads is completely free of charge. Vehicles with a total weight of over 7.5 tonnes pay a charge for driving on motorways, but this does not apply to motorhomes.
  • Environmental zones: The city centres of several cities are classified as 'Umweltzonen', where older diesel vehicles are not allowed to drive. To drive in these zones, a sticker must be obtained and attached to the windscreen. The sticker can be ordered in advance from DEKRA.
  • Speed limits: If you are driving a car or motorhome under 3.5 tonnes, there is a "free speed" limit on motorways. Heavier motorhomes can travel at a maximum speed of 100 km/h on motorways (except where there are overtaking restrictions, where the maximum speed is 80 km/h) and 80 km/h on roads.
  • Per mille limit: 0.5 (0.0 for new licence holders, and for drivers under 21)
  • Traffic rules: Talking on a handheld phone and sending text messages while driving is prohibited. If you get out of your car on a busy road, you must wear a reflective vest.
  • Words in traffic: "Staugefahr" means risk of queuing.
  • Fuel:  So-called 'city diesel' is cleaner, and more expensive, than regular diesel. Biodiesel 100 is pure rapeseed oil and requires a specially adapted engine.
  • Parking rules: "Kurzparkzone" means time-limited parking (you can use a parking disc) and "gebührenpflichtig" means you have to pay for parking.
  • Security: Make sure you have Roadside Assistance, so that you can get help on the spot in case of an accident. The emergency number for the country's emergency services is 112.

Rules on camping and pitches in Germany

  • There really are lots of campsites and caravan parks in Germany.
  • Free camping is only permitted if the landowner has given permission. Unless otherwise indicated, it is permitted to stay overnight in a motorhome parked on a road, street or car park.
