Hann. Münden in Germany
When we decided to explore Korsvirkesvägen this summer we had to choose a number of stops. The entire route is over 300 kilometres long and includes more than 100 cities.
One of the places Peter was drawn to while studying was Hann. Münden. The beautiful images of half-timbered idyll combined with water attracted us, and we were not disappointed!
Hann. Münden is located in the federal state of Lower Saxony in the centre of Germany, about 15 miles south of Hanover and about 20 miles west of Leipzig.
What to do in Hann. Münden?
What to see and do in Hann. Münden? First and foremost, you can stroll through the charming half-timbered houses, but there is much more to see and discover. We've put together a list of our top tips here.
1. Stroll among half-timbered houses
We are travelling along the 'half-timbered road', so it is not surprising that we discover half-timbered houses. Hann. Münden is no exception. The charming half-timbered houses are densely packed, and it's a delight to check out the carpenter's delight.
The half-timbered houses continue street after street with their individual and often slightly slanted houses. Walking here feels a bit like strolling through a fairy tale world.
2. Check out city walls and towers
It's not just the half-timbered houses that make Hann. Münden feels like a fairytale town, but also the city walls and stone towers. The walls are well preserved and the centre of the town is actually so small that you can easily walk around it.
There are also a whole bunch of old towers in Hann. Münden, such as the 40 metre high Fährenpfortenturm.
3. Walking by rivers and bridges
What is special about Hann. Münden is that three rivers flow through the city: Weser, Werra and Fulda. In other words, you have water and bridges around you everywhere.
One of the most beautiful bridges is the Historische Werrabrücke.
4. take a boat trip
Boat trips take place on the rivers Fulda and Weser. An alternative is of course to join a lovely boat trip.
It was also nice to stand at the campsite and watch the boats lock up.
5. Visit St Blasius Kirche
St Blasius Kirche is an impressive church that stands in the centre of the historic old town. The choir and eastern aisle were built in the late 13th century, while the rest of the church was built in the 15th and 16th centuries.
6. see the beautiful town hall
One of the most beautiful buildings in Hann. Münden is the town hall. The original building was built around 1400, and in the early 17th century it was rebuilt in the Weser Renaissance style.
The façade was richly decorated to represent the power and wealth of the time. Today the building houses the tourist information centre and the Ratsbrauhaus restaurant.
7. Have dinner in the "Ratsbrauhaus".
We had dinner one evening in the "Ratsbrauhaus" in the basement of the Town Hall. Peter started with a potato soup. Then he chose "Wildgulasch" with ribbon spaghetti, and Helena ordered Wienerschnitzel with mushroom sauce and French fries.
About had we known how big the desserts were, we would have shared one, but now we each got one. We were able to not eat it all, but it was good! Helena ordered "Kaiserschmarrn", which is a kind of pancake, together with apple compote and vanilla ice cream.
Peter ordered white Sacher cake with mango and yoghurt. We were very full and satisfied after this dinner we can promise!
8. Climb up to the Tillyschanze tower
Another thing to do in Hann. Münden is to climb the Tillyschanze tower, which is located on a hill near the town (in the far corner of the picture below). We had planned to go up here, but cancelled the visit due to heavy rain.
The Tillyschanze is a 25 metre high observation tower in the Reinhardskogen forest, popular with locals and tourists alike. The tower was built between 1881 and 1885, and its name recalls Johann Tserclaes Tilly and the siege of the city of Münden during the 30 Years' War.
9. Learn about Dr Eisenbart
Johann Andreas Eisenbart was born on 27 March 1663 in Oberviechtach, and died on 11 November 1727 in Hann. Münden. Eisenbert was an ophthalmologist and invented a needle for star piercing and a hook for polyp surgery. He made all kinds of medicines, but also hernia ligaments, artificial teeth and artificial eyes.
Dr Eisenbart was buried in a crypt in the choir room, in the middle of the altar of St Aegidienkirche. At the north end of the church is a tombstone from 1837, erected in his memory.
10. Visit Sababurg Sleeping Beauty Castle
If you want to make a small excursion from Hann. Münden, you can visit Sababurg Castle, which is sometimes called "Sleeping Beauty Castle".
Sababurg was built in 1334; after various disputes, the castle became the property of Hesse in the 15th century and was converted into a hunting lodge before being severely damaged by Tilly during the 30 Years' War.
Since the dilapidated castle was surrounded by a high and long thorn hedge at the time, it is possible that it served as a model for the Brothers Grimm's Sleeping Beauty story.
Today, the fabulous castle is no more than a ruin, but it's still worth visiting. When we were here, it was all about being able to walk around the castle and the Rose Garden. If you target certain times (currently weekends from April to October at 14:30) you can experience a fairytale performance of the Brothers Grimm's fairy tale "Sleeping Beauty" in short form.
When we were here, there was also a small food truck, and nearby is also the Sababurg Zoo and the Sababurg primeval forest.

Hann. Münden looks absolutely stunning and a town we first heard about at the beginning of the summer. Now we have a new half-timbered town to visit on our next trip to Germany.
The fact that there is water in the city and even three rivers often makes it even more beautiful and cosy.
