On this page you will find campsites and pitches in Västergötland, organised from north to south. All sites have been visited by us, Peter and Helena, who run FREEDOMtravel.se. The prices indicate what we paid when we visited the site (time in brackets).

Sjötorp - simple natural camping
- Description: Large and very simple campsite on grass, just outside the centre of Sjötorp.
- Service: No service
- Price: 60 kr/day (July 2020)
- Find here: On the left side of the road, before the bridge, if you come from the south and drive towards Sjötorp.
- See and do in the neighbourhood: The locks in Sjötorp, buying ice cream and fish and the locks in Norrqvarn.
Mariestad - parking
- Description: Free parking for motorhomes on hard surfaces, overlooking Lake Vänern. Walking distance to the centre of Mariestad.
- Service: Rubbish bin and recycling. No other services.
- Price: Free of charge

Mariestad - parking space in the harbour
- Description: Two large pitches on asphalt, one in the outer harbour and one just inside. Walking distance to the centre of Mariestad. You can stay a maximum of three days
- Service: Electricity and service building with toilet and shower. More services may be available.
- Price: 220 kr/day with electricity and 190 kr/day without electricity (2022).

Mariestad - First Camp Ekudden
- Description: Nice and green campsite next to Lake Vänern, with sandy beaches and nature reserves. There is a pool right next door. Walking distance to the centre of Mariestad.
- Service: Electricity, service building, fresh water supply, grey and black water drainage and, in summer, a bistro.
- Price: Depends on location, season, etc. Between about 250 kr and 600 kr for a seat.

Töreboda - Wassbacken campsite
- Description: A fantastic campsite in a beautiful location by a lake, surrounded by nature, the Göta Canal and cycle paths.
- Service: Electricity, service house, fresh water supply, grey and black water drainage and a restaurant.

- See and do in the neighbourhood: Beateberg church, cycle rides along the canal, the lock at Tåtorp and Töreboda with Sweden's smallest ferry.
Forsvik lock - car park
- Description: Camping site on gravel, right next to Forsvik lock. One of the many sites in Västergötland along the Göta Canal.
- Service: Refuse collection, toilet and fresh water supply. There is a café and gift shops nearby.
- Price: 180 kr/day without electricity (July 2020)

- See and do in the neighbourhood: Forsvik Lock (the oldest lock in the Göta Canal) and Forsvik Mill with various exhibitions.
Läckö Castle car park/parking space
- Description: Pitches/parking on tarmac just outside Läckö Castle.
- Service: Toilets
- Price: 130 kr/day (July 2020)
- Find here: Drive to Läckö Castle. Motorhome spaces are available in the car park.
- See and do in the neighbourhood: Spikens fishing harbour with restaurants, Läckö Castle, the Viking ship Sigrid Storråda and Naturum Vänerskärgården.
Axvall - Axvall caravan site and family campsite
- Description: Simple pitch/family campsite on grass, next to a football pitch. Good location for visiting Varnhem Abbey Church.
- Service: Electricity, shelter, latrine emptying and fresh water supply.
- Price: 200 kr/day (July 2020)

- See and do in the neighbourhood: Varnhem monastery and abbey church, Kata farm, Naturum Hornborgarsjön and Vallevägen.
Vänersborg Vänersborg guest harbour
- Description: Parking space on asphalt at the guest harbour, with a central and good location for visiting Vänersborg.
- Service: Electricity, shelter, latrine emptying, fresh water supply and staffed office/shop.
- Price: 240 kr/day (August 2020)

- See and do in the neighbourhood: Skräckleparken, Vänersborg Museum, Brinkebergskulle lock, Byklevsfallet and the Halle and Hunneberg landslides.
Trollhättan car park in the lock area
- Description: Parking space on asphalt, with a nice view of the lock area. Good location for visiting the lock area. Cycling distance to the centre of Trollhättan.
- Service: Electricity, possibility to fill fresh water and possibility to empty grey and black water. Toilets are available, but on the other side of Slussen.
- Price: 200 kr/day (August 2020)

- See and do in the neighbourhood: The lock area, the old lock routes, the falls area, the Copper Cliff and the Saab Car Museum.
Hökensås First Camp Hökensås-Tidaholm
- Description: Nice and relaxed campsite in a natural area, for anyone who enjoys the outdoors and/or fishing. You can buy a fishing licence and fish in the area's lakes.
- Service: Electricity, service house, possibility of filling fresh water and possibility of emptying grey and black water. Restaurant during the summer season and fish shop.
- Price: Depends on location, season, etc.

- See and do in the neighbourhood: Fishing, hiking, Brandstorp local history centre, the wooden town of Hjo and the fine wooden churches of Habo and Bottnaryd.
PBorås - parking Astern
- Description: Parking space on asphalt, in a good location for visiting the centre of Borås. However, the site slopes, traffic is close and it is a bit difficult to understand how to park.
- Service: Electricity and small rubbish bins.
- Price: 150 SEK/day (September 2021)

Campsites and pitches in Västergötland - good to know
There are plenty of campsites and pitches in Västergötland, and many are nicely located by lakes or perhaps along the Göta Canal. During the high season, popular sites can be very busy and it can be difficult to find a free site unless you arrive early in the day.
