Food and drink in Slovenia

  • Food culture: Slovenia is where the Alps and the Mediterranean meet, and Slovenian cuisine has influences from Italy as well as Austria, for example.
  • Food: Common ingredients include cereals, vegetables, olives, dairy products, meat and fish from both the sea and lake.
  • In a restaurant: One way to experience Slovenian cuisine is to sneak into a 'gostilna' - an inn or local pub.
  • Dishes: A classic Slovenian dish is štruklji, a kind of dumpling with various fillings. These can be sweet fillings for dessert, or more savoury fillings, such as cream cheese, meat or vegetables. Soups are also popular, including 'Goveja juha' (oxtail soup).
  • Wine: Slovenia produces wine, but hardly exports any. However, you can take the opportunity to taste the wine on site!

Travelling to Slovenia

  • Flight: Several airlines fly between Stockholm (Arlanda) and Ljubljana, with a stopover in Frankfurt, for example,
    Munich or Vienna.
  • Car: It is also possible to travel to Slovenia by car. It takes about 21 hours (203 miles) to drive from Stockholm to Ljubljana, calculated in pure driving time.

    They export wine all over the world but there are only four wines in the absolute top class 🙂 it is niche to fine restaurants around the world. They do not mass produce to supply our system companies, however.
