Why camp in Croatia?

There are plenty of campsites in Croatia, ranging from small and simple to large and luxurious. There are only a limited number of pitches, but there are small and simple campsites to complement them. Croatia offers a stunningly beautiful coastline, with crystal clear seas, lots of islands and charming towns.

Zagreb - Camp Zagreb

  • DescriptionSuper-modern campsite, beautifully situated on a lake on the outskirts of the city. There is a wellness centre, horse riding and a train to Zagreb nearby. There aren't many campsites in Croatia, but this one is almost like one.
  • Service: Service house, restaurant/pizzeria, wellness centre, shuttle bus to the train and good WiFi included in the price.

Opatija

Opatija, Istria - Autocamp

  • DescriptionA large but simple campsite on a hillside. You simply place yourself where you can fit. Close to rocky beaches, supermarket and buses to the centre of Opatija.
  • Service: Service centre with toilets and showers.
  • Price: Approximately €20/day in 2018

Porec, Istria - Camping Bijela Uvala

  • Description: A very large seaside campsite with 2000 pitches, including 390 cabins.
  • ServiceEight service houses, eight restaurants, three swimming pools, two shops and WiFi included in the price. A tourist train runs from a nearby hotel into town.

Vrsar, Istria - Camping Porto Sole

  • DescriptionA large green campsite right on the waterfront, with over 800 pitches and walking distance along the sea to the city centre.

Labin, Istria - Camping Marina

  • DescriptionA scenic campsite with a stunning swimming pool, charming beaches and a diving centre.
  • Service: Service house, restaurant, beach bar and well-functioning WiFi included in the price.
  • Price: 19 euros/day in low season 2016 with ACSI discount.

Camping Bi-Village i Fazana

Fazana - Camping Bi-village

  • DescriptionA huge campsite with space for 1100 vehicles. Perhaps a little impersonal, but it has everything for families with children, including a high ropes course, and is within walking distance of the town.
  • Service: Service house, restaurants and WiFi included in the price, but worked poorly when we were there.
  • Price: 15 euros/day in low season 2016 with ACSI discount.

Pula, Istria - Camping Brioni

  • DescriptionA large campsite right by the water, formerly known as Puntizela. One part is a bit more child-friendly, while there is an outdoor bar and more young people in another part. We have also been here during the low season, in November.
  • Service: Service centre, bar and WiFi in some areas of the campsite.
  • Price: Approximately €34/day in 2015.

Plitvice National Park Bear camp

  • DescriptionInstead of pitches in Croatia there are simple and affordable campsites. This is a very simple campsite on a large private plot. Good location for visiting Plitvice National Park.
  • Service: Service house, water, emptying the toilet tank, electricity and WiFi included in the price.
  • Price: €17/day in October 2015.
  • Find here: Located just north of the Plitvice Lakes. Drive towards Grabovac and look out for large signs saying "Bear camp".
  • See and do in the neighbourhood: The stunning Plitvice National Park, with hiking trails and boat trips.
Pag i Kroatien

Pag - Camping Šimuni

  • DescriptionA large and beautiful campsite with several beaches, restaurants and lots of activities. A natural feel with wooden and stone buildings.
  • Service: Service house, water, toilet tank emptying, electricity, WiFi, restaurants, shops, beauty centre and lots of activities.

  • DescriptionA slightly larger campsite that is nicely situated by the water. It is also close to the Paklenica National Park.

  • Description: A huge camping and holiday resort with just the right amount of all from beach and poles to horse riding lessons and diving school.

Pakoštane - Camping Kozarica

  • DescriptionA nice and green campsite with a coast where you can swim.
  • Service: Service house, water, toilet tank emptying, electricity, WiFi, restaurants, cafes, supermarket, a small pool and diving school.

  • See and do in the neighbourhood: Pakostane with its cosy promenade. Also visit the interesting Zadar.

Trogir Camping Rozac

  • DescriptionCamping on a nice little beach, about 20 minutes walk from the centre of Trogir.
  • Service: Service house, restaurant open in high season, and WiFi (cost extra when we were there, but reportedly included in the price from 2016).
  • Price: 16 euros/day with ACSI discount in low season 2015.
  • Find here: Drive to Trogir, onto the small island and then onto the next island. Turn right on this island and follow the signs for the campsite.
  • See and do in the neighbourhood: Unesco World Heritage Site Trogir, with charming alleys. A bit to the north is Krka National Park, which is well worth a visit.
Camping Split

Split - Camping Stobrec

  • DescriptionLarge and well-maintained campsite with its own beach, 5km from Split and with a bus service to the town just outside.
  • Service: Service house, laundry, small supermarket, restaurant, hairdresser, massage and WiFi included in the price.
  • Price: 16 euros/day with ACSI discount in low season 2015.
  • Find here: Drive towards Stobrec (just south of Split) - the campsite is clearly signposted.

Omis - Camping Galeb

  • DescriptionLarge campsite with its own sandy(!) beach and walking distance to the centre of Omis. Good location, but perhaps a little impersonal and a bit of a "blowhole".
  • Service: Service centre, restaurant, bar and WiFi (at extra cost).
  • Price: 16 €/day with ACSI discount in low season on B and C pitches in 2015.

  • See and do in the neighbourhood: The charming town of Omis, where you can take a variety of different boat trips on the river.

Bol, Brac - Camping Kito

  • DescriptionPersonal family run campsite among olive trees. Walking distance to the centre of Bol and the beaches.
  • Service: Simple service house, restaurant (in high season), and WiFi in a small part of the campsite.
  • Price: 17 €/day in low season 2015.

Makarska - Camping Jure

  • DescriptionCamping in Vira, a few kilometres from Hvar, with many pitches overlooking the water.
  • Service: Service house, restaurant, WiFi (at extra cost) and shuttle bus to Hvar.
  • Price: €26/day in September 2015.

Vrboska, Island of Hvar Nudist camp

  • Description: Naturist campsite where many of the pitches are nicely located along the waterfront. Relatively close to Stari Grad (by car or taxi).
  • Service: Service centre, washing machines, shop, restaurant and WiFi (at extra cost).
  • Price: €20/day in September 2015.

Camping Solitudo

Dubrovnik - Camping Solitudo

  • DescriptionLarge and well-maintained campsite, located close to the centre of Dubrovnik. Just outside the campsite you can catch a bus to the Old Town every 10 minutes.
  • Service: Nice service house, nice laundry, restaurant, shop, WiFi included in the price and swimming pool.
  • Price: 40 euros/day in September 2015.
  • Find here: Valamar Riviera d.d., Stancija Kaligari 1, Poreč. Drive to Dubrovnik and follow the signs to the campsite, alternatively to "Babin Kuk".

Car and camping in Croatia

  • Capital city: Zagreb
  • Language: Croatian
  • Residents: 4.1 million (2017)
  • Currency: Kuna (HRK)
  • Price mode: Cheaper than Sweden
  • Religion: Christianity (mainly Catholicism)
  • Flag: The flag of Croatia is a tricolour in red, white and blue, with the Croatian coat of arms in the centre.
  • Watch out: Exercise normal caution
  • Think about: Caravan sites are not common in Croatia, but there are plenty of campsites of various kinds. Respect that you should not free camp.

Roads and driving in Croatia

  • Roads: Most roads are good and of a high standard.
  • Road tolls: Motorways and highways are subject to charges. You can pay at roadside toll stations, in cash or by card. It is also possible to obtain an electronic reading device.
  • Speed limits: Passenger cars and motor homes under 3.5 tonnes drive on motorway 130, expressway 110 and road 90. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes can only drive on the 90 motorway.
  • Per mille limit: 0.5 (0.0 for professional drivers, drivers under 24 and drivers of vehicles over 3.5 tonnes)
  • Traffic rules: Talking on a handheld phone and sending text messages while driving is prohibited. Vehicles with trailers must have two warning triangles. If you leave your car on a busy road, you must wear a reflective vest.
  • Fuel: Diesel is called "dizel" or "eurodizel".
  • Parking rules: Please use fenced or guarded car parks. Improperly parked vehicles risk having their wheels locked.
  • Security: Make sure you have Roadside Assistance, so that you can get help on the spot in case of an accident. The emergency number for the country's emergency services is 112.

Rules on camping and pitches in Croatia

  • Camping: There are plenty of campsites and even the occasional caravan site in Croatia.
  • Parking spaces: Although there are not many caravan sites in Croatia, it's worth checking out. Mini camps, which are smaller campsites that often also have lower prices.
  • Free camping: Free camping is only allowed if the landowner has given permission. Otherwise, free camping is not permitted.
