Restaurants in Split

There are of course plenty of restaurants in Split to choose from. Want some tips on the way? Or maybe just want to know a little more about the restaurant culture in Croatia's second largest city? We've had time to visit a bunch of eateries, and you can read more about them here.

1st Kavana Central

Kavana Central, located at the Santa Lucia hotel on Nardoni trg square, is a place we end up at almost every time we are in Split. We also recommend this place, whether you want to eat well-prepared food or enjoy delicious pastries.

This time we had a relatively simple meal, and even though it was winter, we could sit on the nice outdoor terrace. Both Helena's pasta and Peter's pašticada (Croatian meat stew) with gnocchi were delicious. very good.

Helena chose to end the meal with one of the place's luxurious pastries (big picture). In the small pictures you can see some more of the pastries, which we photographed when we were here in May.

2nd Trattoria Tinel

Trattoria Tinel is a relaxed and cosy place that offers a wide range of fish and seafood. You can also choose from meat dishes and traditional Croatian cuisine. We were here in May this year, in the context of an eventand served the Croatian stew pašticada, shrimp and beans with risotto and squid stew. Everything was well prepared and delicious!

3rd Konoba Varos

Konoba Varos is a very popular restaurant in Split, especially among locals, where you can enjoy traditional Croatian dishes. The menu includes grilled fish and meat and Croatian dishes such as pašticada and peka.

We were here for Christmas Eve lunch and agreed to try the traditional food that is apparently eaten on this particular day of the year - bakalar. After an initial fish soup, we were served a stew made from dried cod. This particular dish may not have been our favourite, but the restaurant is cosy, the staff friendly and the food well prepared. We can highly recommend this place!

4. pizzeria Galija

When we arrived in Split this time, we were hungry for pizza, after a long flight with relatively little to eat. We then found the pizzeria Galija, which turned out to be a cosy place with nice staff. The pizzas were also very good. We were less impressed with the red wine, which was ice cold, but the pizza and beer were perfect. Alternatives include salads and pasta.

5. adriana

Adriana is one of the many restaurants along the Riva harbour promenade in Split. We found our way here when we were tired and hungry and didn't want to look much further. The menu (classic meat and fish dishes) didn't inspire us at first, but then we found a seafood pasta on the starter menu.

Starters can be a bit bigger in Croatia, and indeed, this small pasta worked well as a late lunch for us. And it was delicious!

More restaurants in Split

Of course, there are many more restaurants in Split beyond the ones we've visited. Here are some that we are curious about:

  • Bokeria Kitchen & Wine is a modern food and wine outlet that has received good reviews. However, it was closed when we visited on Boxing Day. (Domaldova ul. 8)
  • Fantazija Kitchen and wine also has a good reputation. Here you can find seafood, squid and meat dishes (Ul. bana Josipa Jelačića 1).
  • Šug is one of the restaurants on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list, i.e. the restaurant does not have a star, but it should be affordable and good. (Ul. Tolstojeva 1a)
  • Konoba Fetivi is also a Bib Gourmand restaurant, focusing on traditional Croatian cuisine (Tomića Stine 4).

Good to know about restaurants in Split

We conclude with some general things to know about restaurants in Split.

"Konoba" means roughly "traditional tavern" and whenever a restaurant is named "kanoba" you can expect to get traditional Croatian dishes such as grilled meat, grilled fish and dishes like pašticada and peka.

The price situation is slightly lower than in Sweden, but higher than in several neighbouring countries. On 1 January 2023, Croatia will also adopt the euro as its currency, which may further affect prices. Note, however, that beer and wine are often cheaper than in Sweden and that portions are generally large.

Michelangelo Islands lists not only exclusive restaurants with stars, but also other good restaurants. here you will find their tips for restaurants in Split and the surrounding area.

In the summer months Split is a very busy city, which means that popular restaurants can get crowded. If you want to eat in a particular place, it's a good idea to book in advance.

In winter many restaurants stay open, but some close down as there are fewer tourists in the city. On Christmas Day and Boxing Day, many restaurants close, but some stay open.
