Isn't it frustrating not to be able to pack your swimwear, sun hat and slippers for a two-week trip to Thailand? Many of us miss travelling to sun and warmth. We miss culinary food experiences, shopping trips in big cities, spa weekends, hotel nights, holiday villages and all-inclusive. The list could be long.

With the mobility we have had in recent years, many of us also have friends and family abroad, which of course we are missing a bit more right now. We remain hopeful that we will soon be able to travel as usual again. But what can we do to quench the thirst for travel a little, at a time when this is not yet possible?

Planning the future of travel

When, for once, we may have time to travel and have realised that many tasks can be done just as well from home as remotely, we are advised not to travel. It may seem unfair, but it's time to persevere!

Spend time researching, making lists and planning where you want to travel in the future. Are you a sun worshipper and want to go to beaches with umbrella drinks? An adventurer looking for adrenaline rushes? Cultured and eager to explore historical sites and museums? Or a foodie who wants to embark on a food journey like no other?

Maybe you like it all and think it's time to save up for a trip around the world. Whichever traveller you identify as, planning and facts are an essential part of travelling. Even if you're backpacking and want to take the day as it comes, it's a good idea to think about what part of the world you want to travel to. Or if there are any particular places or sights you want to visit.

Make planning a fun process and part of the journey itself! It allows us to dream away a bit, create clear goals and also be ready to go when it's possible to travel as usual again.

Learn about the world - and dream away

Netflix and other streaming services are full of documentaries from around the world. Take the opportunity to learn more about a destination you dream of travelling to. Watch a nature documentary from the Borneo rainforest or get inspired by food documentaries from Italy. Delve into the subject of dark tourism if you dare, or watch a series in another language to get an exotic feel.

Flip through old travel guides, photo albums from previous trips or read a book to learn something new about a place you'd like to visit. Why not listen to a podcast from an exciting destination? There is plenty of information, inspiration and atmosphere to be found on the various digital platforms, so let's take advantage of it.

Why not also play online casino in various exotic surroundings during these gloomy times to dream away to warmer climes? With a bit of luck and skill, you might find a few pennies in your bank account afterwards, so you can actually go on that dream trip in the future.

If you can't get to the destination - let the destination come to you

Another way to get a little closer to travelling is to let the destination influence your home. Give your family dinner a theme, why not go all out with Mexican food, music, entertainment and decorations? Or invite your closest friends over for an authentic Japanese sushi night.

Spruce up your home, dress up, find a suitable playlist. Try to give all your senses something that reminds you of a destination you wish you could go to. Let your creativity flow! Of course, it's not comparable to the physical travelling we're used to, but let's make the best of the current situation - if only for the sake of a nice evening!

Eventually we will be able to travel as we are used to again and until then we will have to settle for planning, being inspired and dreaming away to distant lands.
