Where Swedish travellers are going this summer

Summer is here, which means many people want to travel abroad and discover more of what Europe has to offer. Norwegian has compiled a list of the most popular international destinations for Swedish travellers in summer 2023. In the summer programme, Norwegian offers almost 300 routes to over 120 destinations. The most booked destinations among Swedish travellers in summer 2023 are:

  1. London
  2. Malaga
  3. Alicante
  4. Barcelona
  5. Nice

Sunshine and swimming are the best way to feel like a holiday

When Göta kanal asked Swedes the question "What is a summer holiday for you?". the answer was clear: sun, swimming, the beach and the sea top the list. However, hardly anyone associates summer holidays with time in the car (2 %) or in the garden (3 %). In contrast to the classic approach - a question and a number of response options - Sifo analysed more than a thousand responses to an open-ended question on what people associate with summer holidays. From the survey: What is a summer holiday for you?

  1. Sun and bath (35 %)
  2. Family and friends (20 %)
  3. Leave, no job (19 %)
  4. Relaxation, peace and quiet (16 %)
  5. Change of scenery, away from everyday life (14 %)
  6. Activities and experiences (14 %)
  7. Eating and drinking well (12 %)
  8. Going abroad, travelling (12 %)
  9. Summer cottage (11 %)
  10. Do nothing, whatever you want (9 %)

Sweden on The Times list of Europe's best glamping sites

Experiencing the Swedish forest in seclusion and staying in comfortable, Scandinavian-designed hotel rooms is what makes The Times recognise Happie Camp in Kronoberg County and put it on the list of the 25 best glamping sites in Europe. Fejan Outdoor, in the Stockholm archipelago, is also on the list.

Malmö Airport invests in electric flights

Swedavia has decided to make Malmö Airport available as a test arena for Heart Aerospace's ES-30 electric aircraft. The full-scale model of the aircraft will be tested and demonstrated for taxiing and charging at the airport. In addition to Swedavia, Heart Aerospace, BRA, SAS and Northvolt are participating in the test activities. The project is co-financed with approximately SEK 20 million by the innovation agency Vinnova.

What is happening in the motorhome and caravan market?

  • Number of mobile homes: 119 558, of which 42 % over 15 years old
  • Average age at scrapping: 40 years for caravans and 33 for motorhomes

Northern lights top Swedes' Sweden bucket list

Sweden is a country full of places and experiences during the summer, but what do Swedes dream of seeing and experiencing? According to a survey by Forsbergs Fritidscenter, conducted in Kantar Sifo's web panel, the list is undoubtedly topped by the northern lights. Participating in classic exercise races such as Vansbrosimmet or Vätternrundan came at the bottom of the list, attracting only one and three per cent of Swedes respectively. Here is the top list:

  1. See the Northern Lights (33 %)
  2. Travelling on the Göta Canal (22 %)
  3. Travelling the High Coast (21 %)
  4. Treriksröset (19 %)
  5. Discovering Sweden by Motorhome (19 %)
  6. Abisko Lapland gate (19 %)
  7. Climb Kebnekaise (18 %)

Reflection of the week

It's nice that the Swedish High Coast, where we recently travelled, is so high on the Swedes' Sweden bucket list. I don't know specifically what's at the top of ours, but right now it's probably about seeing more of Norrland, which we've seen so little of so far. What is at the top of your Sweden bucket list?
