Yesterday it was time to leave Sicily and roll into Calabria, the Italian region down at the "tip of the toe". We liked the east coast of Sicily the most and therefore it was almost a bit sad to leave this part of the island. But of course we want to move on!

Today we have driven from Syracuse to Naxos Giardini, which is just south of Taormina. Now we have almost rounded Sicily and pretty soon it's time for us to head over to Calabria on the Italian mainland. But not quite yet! First, of course, we will look around in Taormina and in Giardini Naxos. Today, on the road between Catania and Taormina, we have also seen the mighty volcano Etna from a distance.

Today we visited Syracuse, on the east coast of Sicily. Syracuse is a city with a long history. In fact, it was founded in 734 BC by Greek colonisers. With half a million inhabitants at the time, it was the most powerful of Greece's colonies across the sea and a direct rival to Athens.

The historic town of Noto in Sicily

Today we visited the Sicilian town of Noto. Noto is located south of Syracuse and despite its small size (24,000 inhabitants) is well worth a visit. In 2002, the town and its church were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, and it's not hard to see why.

Motorhome parking in Pozzallo - Sicily in the summer heat

We have now found a pitch in Pozzallo, Sicily. High season and 35 degree heat is stressful when travelling, and Sicily is probably better at another time of the year. Campsites are of course also significantly more expensive during the high season and we would like to find affordable pitches, but asphalt parking without shade is tough in the heat ... One positive thing is that despite the high season, it has not been full anywhere.

Marina di Ragusa - sun and swimming in Sicily

Now we have arrived at Marina di Ragusa, which is on the coast not far from Ragusa. We rolled into the car park here late last night. This is a fairly ordinary site on an asphalt car park, but there are services (even showers!) and we got a fantastic welcome from Tony, who immediately wanted to tell us all about where we had come, about the beer festival going on and how to find our way around the town.

Ancient temples in Agrigento, Sicily

Agrigento on the southern coast of Sicily is famous for its ancient temples, dating back to the 4th century BC, in the Valle dei Templi. The Temple of Concordia is the best preserved Doric sanctuary in Sicily, and perhaps in the world. The oldest is the Temple of Hercules, with its tall columns.
