It's time for the third instalment of our motorhome trip to New Zealand in 2006/2007... We have now reached the ferry crossing from the North Island to the South Island. And suddenly a whole new landscape awaits!

Abel Tasman and new landscape

The first thing we did when we got to the South Island was to go to Abel Tasman National Park, where we did a fantastic canoe trip. We also had time for a short hike in the beautiful nature. The vegetation in New Zealand is fantastically green, while not having to worry about dangerous animals. Absolutely perfect!

Then we continued driving south along the east coast, and just driving along the roads is fascinating as the landscape is constantly changing.

Is this the same country? Yes, apparently...

Whale watching in Kaikoura

We drove to Kaiokoura to experience whale watching. We had to wait several hours in the harbour, but it was really worth it. Off the coast of New Zealand there are deep ravines in the sea where really big whales live. It was incredibly powerful to see them pop up above the surface.

It doesn't look like much in the picture, but it was awesome, this is a sperm whale and they are big!

We have also written three other parts about our motorhome trip in New Zealand. The trip started in Auckland, where we went horse riding and visited the Sky Tower. We then visited the volcanic White Island before going on an adventure in Rotorua - everything from seeing geysers to rolling down hills in a 'zorb'. Finally, there was a quad bike ride, a glacial lake and a chance to swim with dolphins.

It's great that the dolphins choose to come to the boats, just because they think it's fun!
