The world's best travel destinations have been named at the Readers' Travel Awards 2012. Such rankings are, in a way, completely impossible to relate to. It all depends on what you are looking for. But it's still fun sometimes to see which places make it to the top ...

Making this kind of list is anything but easy, and not just because everyone has different criteria for what is important for a destination.
I think there are very few people who have enough travel experience to make a serious judgement on what would be the "world's best city" or "world's best destination".
For example, while I love Beijing, I would definitely not make the statement that it is "the best city in the world" because there are so many cities I have never visited that could very well be better.
If we are talking about subjective judgements, then (according to my reasoning) you should consider yourself to have visited most of the world before you can start ranking the "world's best".
I apologise for being a bit "dry", but sometimes I'm in that mood. 😉

Krister, quite ok with a little "dry" comment!

I actually agree with you completely! It's impossible to compare places, and even if it were possible, no one has that kind of overview... That's why you have to take these lists for what they are... I think it's mostly fun to get suggestions for destinations, to see if a place pops up that I want to visit, but haven't thought about...

Ha ha... as I said, while my (blog contacts and) colleagues at work are going to exotic destinations right now; Japan, India, Thailand, etc. so I will eventually go three days to Laxå! Wondering what is the best thing to do in Laxå??? It would be a challenge to figure out.

Yes, there are probably many great travel destinations. Even here, everyone has different tastes. I am childishly fond of Spain (maybe I was Spanish in my previous life? hihi) While someone else probably thinks Spain is boring ;-))
There are also so many places you want to go to, but time and money are not always enough. Imagine if you could work as a travel writer or something and travel around and write reports - what a dream.
When we went on our little motorhome trip last time, when we just went without real goals and did not plan anything special to do, you first thought that jisses what will this be - boring?! But once on the road, we realised that it was quite nice to just take the day as it came, not have too much planned and stay right where you found something nice or interesting instead of feeling that you have to drive because you need to reach just "there" before the chef is so and so ...
But every journey has its charm!

Inga Magnusson, well now we hope that you figure it out and report from Laxå!
🙂
Ninni, yes, there are plenty of places to dream about... even if you won't be able to visit all of them. Then I agree, all trips have their charm and it is impossible to say in advance which destinations will be good... something that sounds "unexciting" can be great just because you end up in a cosy hotel/camping, meet nice people or get nice weather...
