Inauguration of the Jubilee Bridge

On 24 October 2023, the Nordic Museum 150 years, and we were there for the inauguration of the new Jubilee Bridge. The programme began with singing by the Radio Choir and a speech by Sanne Houby-Nielsen, Chairman of the Nordic Museum Foundation.

The Minister for Culture, Parisa Liljestrand, then gave the opening speech. She had been asked to read out three wishes for the future, which would then be sealed in a time capsule. In short, she wanted a safer, greener and freer Sweden.

She then cut the ribbon on the new Jubilee Bridge.

Jubilee Bridge - for increased accessibility

The Jubilee Bridge, which was inaugurated together with a new lift, are long-awaited and necessary to meet today's accessibility requirements. When the building was constructed in three stages, there was a difference in level on the top floor, which was solved by stairs. This has always been a problem for families with children and people with reduced mobility, for example, and the new bridge now offers a solution.

The bridge, which was designed by the Nordic Museum's house architects, also offers a great view of the museum's grand hall with the large Gustav Vasa statue.

New exhibition: Strindberg vs. Youssef

The exhibition "Strindberg vs. Youssef", based on Strindberg's autobiographical work Inferno, opens on 27 October. During the press screening, we met the artist Daniel Youssef and Vanessa Candy, Director of the Museum Experience and curator of the exhibition.

Working with overturned words and neon to stage his work, Daniel Youssef talked about how easy it is to get lost in language when using Google Translate to translate from Swedish to English to Arabic and back again.

Vanessa Candy explained that Strindberg was once an important "acquirer" for the Nordic Museum, i.e. a person who collected artefacts for the museum. The exhibition also includes one of his works of art - the double-sided painting "The Wave VIII" and "The Wave VI" - with a fateful motif that Strindberg returned to many times.

Preview of the "Nordbor" exhibition

The exhibition "Nordbor" is the Nordic Museum's largest ever exhibition. Using 4000 artefacts and images, the exhibition tells the story of life in the Nordic region over 500 years.

Unlike other exhibitions, which have focused on a particular theme, this one follows the development of the Nordic region over time. The exhibition highlights real stories and follows three tracks: Nature, Family and Faith. After five years of preparation, the exhibition will open in February 2024. We only got to see a small part of it now - a preview - and we'd love to come back to see the whole thing!

Lovely walk from the Nordic Museum
