The campsite owner at Camping Sardegna in Porto Pino, Sardinia, asked us to move the motorhome back two metres. No problem! Since we were travelling such a short distance, we didn't bother to close the windows... but we should have.

Now we have made it to Porto Pino, and a campsite in southern Sardinia outside St Anna Arresi. After a lot of free camping, we had a great need for services (garbage collection, possibility to fill and empty tanks and so on) but during high season or almost high season you have to be careful not to end up at campsites with completely hysterical prices. Camping Sardegna in Porto Pino had no website - which I thought seemed promising from a price point of view.

It is wonderful to fricamp in Sardinia! It's now five days since we filled and emptied the tanks in the car and charged electricity from a pole. The water in the tank is probably almost gone, the electricity in the car is ticking down and the car is full of things that need to be emptied: rubbish, waste water, toilet. Nevertheless, we decide to hitchhike one more night!

Yesterday we saw a whole bunch of people picking vongole mussels (or whatever these mussels are called?) here in Sardinia, and then we also got the urge to try it! On the small headland where we are standing (Punta S'Aliga, south of Portovesme) there is an outer beach, which is nice to swim in, and an inner beach, with stagnant shallow water filled with seaweed - this is apparently where the mussels thrive.

The advantage of a motorhome is that you are not restricted to charter destinations or places where there are hotels. Today, we started the journey south from Buggerru, travelling on breathtakingly beautiful roads through the mountains, with many impressive views of the sea.

The day before yesterday we left Bosa and started driving south along the west coast of Sardinia. Today we have reached the small village of Portixeddu, just north of Buggerru. The roads are winding - sometimes along the coast and sometimes high up in the mountains. We have driven past fields, beaches, high mountains and industrial areas, and sometimes straight through small charming villages (where the motorhome barely fits on the roads).

You may remember that we had a nice evening with our British and German table neighbours at the restaurant the other night? They ended up inviting us to their village in Sardinia, and of course we didn't hesitate to accept such a nice invitation! In the middle of the day yesterday we packed up the motorhome and drove to Scano di Montiferro, not far from Bosa. Wow, what an experience!

Birthday celebration in Sardinia. First a BIG THANK YOU for all the nice congratulations that came in on Peter's 55th birthday yesterday! We celebrated the big day at the small cosy beach restaurant here at S'abba Druche, just north of Bosa. And it was even more pleasant than perhaps expected, both good food and nice meetings!

Now we have found a favourite place in Sardinia where we feel comfortable! As soon as we rolled in yesterday we felt that "Here we stay for a while!". We started in Alghero on the west coast yesterday afternoon and drove south - on nice winding roads along the coast.

The caves of Neptune, or Grotta di Nettuno as they are called in Italian, are located outside Alghero in Sardinia. Neptune's caves were discovered by fishermen in the 19th century and the cave system is one of the most famous on the island. A lovely boat trip took us there and it was very convenient in the summer heat. Come to the Neptune Caves in Sardinia!
