How to find affordable holidays during Christmas and New Year? If you don't have a motorhome, that is, but are planning a motorhome-free trip? There are plenty of ways to keep prices down. The first is to travel on Christmas Eve. That's when prices can be really low. Flying on Christmas Eve may not be the most fun thing to do, but it's cheap, and you can stay and celebrate New Year's Eve too. In general, it is important to be flexible with departure times and dates. If you are, it is possible to find super cheap trips!
It's also a good idea to check out airports other than the major ones closest to you. Travelling to and from the airport will be a bit longer, but on the other hand, you can often save a lot of money by not using the "standard" airports. So where should you go to celebrate Christmas and New Year? Here are five places that always work during the New Year:
Innehållsförteckning
London
There is something special about celebrating New Year in London. If you've never been there when Big Ben counts down in the last minute of the year with the fireworks that follow, you're missing out! London is one of Sweden's absolute favourite cities and it doesn't get any worse during the winter.
The Southbank Centre's winter festival is reason enough to visit the city for its Christmas and New Year celebrations, not to mention the Christmas market. It's also never particularly expensive to travelling to London and in terms of what you get, it is clearly the most affordable option of all.
Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is a real classic for many Swedes escaping the darkness and cold of winter. Celebrating Christmas and New Year in Gran Canaria is a slightly different experience compared to Sweden, to say the least. You could say that you don't have to worry about warm clothes anyway! There are always a lot of Swedes there around Christmas and New Year that you can celebrate with, which is very nice.
Tenerife
Tenerife and Gran Canaria? Is there a big difference? Maybe not so much, but they are there. Gran Canaria is a bit more of a party island, while a Travel to Tenerife is more tidy and suitable for families with children (but you can probably party in Tenerife too). Otherwise, it is quite similar, you go there and celebrate Christmas and New Year a little because you are tired of the Swedish lack of good weather.
Bangkok
Since Thailand is not a Christian country, you can avoid the Christmas hysteria and celebrate as you wish. In addition, the prices are very good (if you don't include the price of airline tickets) so you can spend a little extra.
Bangkok is also a very exciting city at any time of the year, and fine beaches are of course within reach. A perfect destination for those who more or less want to skip the Christmas celebrations - the Thais are more committed to New Year!
New York
New Year in London or New York... Which is more legendary? Times Square or Big Ben? The New Year's Eve celebrations in Times Square are one of those things that many people know and want to experience after watching all the films featuring the traditional 'Ball Drop' (when a giant ball is dropped onto the pole and tens of thousands of people simultaneously count down to the new year) and the rain of confetti that follows.
It's a powerful feeling to count down the new year! Of course, there is more to see in New York than that. So a travel to New York might not be a bad idea to try!

Since we got the apartment here in 2003, we have celebrated all (except one) Christmas/New Year here. I enjoy doing it, and we are fortunate to be able to choose more off-season times to move around outside of Torrevieja 🙂 ).

Ama de casa, I understand that you choose to celebrate Christmas in Torrevieja. Lovely climate to celebrate Christmas in! 🙂
Krisztina, this year we will actually have Christmas at home for the first time in many years. Our next planned trip is to Finland in January.

The options are many and we have been in Thailand for several years and travelled in early December and stayed until March. Good flight prices then! Some years when the daughters were small we were in the Alps and went skiing and that was also great.
And I take finding good airline tickets as a challenge. It should be good in terms of stops if they exist and I always look at the respective airlines and have succeeded well there. Their own low-cost sites are often very informative.
This year we'll be home for Christmas and then we'll see.

This year is the first time in several years that we are home for Christmas and New Year. We usually stay in Benidorm, but will take a long trip there early next year instead. We have been to Tenerife and Gran Canaria over Christmas and New Year, but there was too much Feliz Navidad in all the speakers everywhere. We went crazy. We were also unlucky with the weather in the north of Tenerife.
We have also celebrated big city Christmas... when we were younger;-)

Steve, Getingstorp sounds like the perfect place to celebrate Christmas!
BP, then for you it will be like for us - home for the first time in many years. We like to travel abroad over Christmas and New Year, but of course it is important to find a destination that suits you so that it does not become as you describe, but of course it is not always easy to know beforehand.
Ditte, there are many options! You also seem to be experienced when it comes to finding good airline tickets. It can take a bit of work sometimes to find the right one, but it can be worth it!
The travel dream, oh yes, how fun that we are mentioned in it! Yes, I know it, but I'm so stone age that I don't even know how to listen to podcasts... I may have to learn it 😉
