Time flies and it's already Monday again, which means travel news here at FREEDOMtravel. This week we can report on a number of new airlines and another motorhome and caravan fair at Elmia, among other things. And then there's sea rescue, ice cream and newly created Swedish flavours ...

Ryanair launches Arlanda - Skellefteå flight route

Ryanair is continuing its expansion in Sweden and at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. In May, the company announced that it plans to open a base with initially two aircraft and some twenty routes to Europe as well as domestic services to Gothenburg and Malmö. Now they are adding another domestic route to Skellefteå. Starting on 3 December 2021, Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) - Skellefteå Airport (SFT) will be operated twice a week on Mondays and Fridays.

Finnair adds routes from Arlanda to Los Angeles and New York

Finnish airline Finnair is expanding access to North America for the winter season, launching two new long-haul routes to Los Angeles and New York from its new base at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. The new destinations will complement the direct routes to Miami and New York. Bangkok and Phuket starting this autumn.

  • From 23 October: Arlanda - Miami International Airport (MIA) 2 times/week and from 29 Nov 4 times/week.
  • From 2 Nov: Arlanda - Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) 3 times/week.
  • From 7 December: Arlanda - New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) 3 times/week and until Christmas 4 times/week.

Eurowings invests heavily with 20 new European routes from Arlanda.

The German low-cost airline Eurowings continues to invest in the Swedish market and is establishing a new base at Stockholm Arlanda Airport for the 2022 summer season. The Lufthansa-owned airline is developing its destination offering and improving access from Stockholm with 20 new direct routes within Europe. The routes will include Barcelona, Malaga, Rome, Nice, Palma de Mallorca, Gdansk, Berlin and Copenhagen.

Bergholm organises its own fair at Elmia: Smaka på Camping.

From 14-17 October, around 100 motorhomes and caravans will be on display in Hall A at Elmia in Jönköping. Bergholm, the motorhome and caravan importer, is organising the "Taste of Camping" fair, with the new products for 2022. Other exhibitors include tents and accessories. Taste menus that reflect the countries Bergholm's brands come from, Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden, will be offered. The programme also includes musical entertainment and a dinner show. Leisure boats in focus as summer of sea rescue summarised

During the summer, the Swedish Maritime Administration's national sea and air rescue centre carried out almost 800 sea rescue operations, the majority of which were carried out against various recreational boats. The metropolitan regions accounted for the largest share of rescue operations during the summer. Most operations were carried out in Västra Götaland County (173), followed by Stockholm County (161) and Skåne County (98).

SIA Ice Cream and SkiStar in collaboration: Valle the Snowman becomes ice cream!

Valle the Snowman is children's best friend at SkiStar's destinations, and soon Valle will also be the model for Valleglassen - a new ice cream stick in the form of creamy vanilla and strawberry flavoured ice cream that will be sold exclusively at SkiStar from the winter season. This is the result of a new collaboration between SIA Glass and SkiStar.

New Swedish flavours in campaign for Sweden

Visit Sweden is planning to reach nearly 10 million Germans, Brits and Americans with its 'The Taste of Swedish Summer' campaign. The campaign is based on photos and films where newly created summer flavours will attract more people to discover the Swedenand provides tips on restaurants, shops and markets. The campaign was created by chemist Lena Engelmark-Embertsén and restaurant owner Elvira Lindqvist. Lena and Elvira have created 22 Swedish summer flavours, such as:

  • Fermented birch drink
  • Spruce seed oil
  • Pickled green strawberries with wild garlic
  • Pickled cloudberries
  • Pickled chanterelles with sage

Reflection of the week

It is now clear that things are happening in the travel and aviation industry, and many are daring to invest in new airlines. It is also interesting that there will be another camping fair at Elmia. KABES and Adria's fair attracted a lot of people. Now we will see if Bergholm's fair will also be popular!
