Friday blog: Houseboat life in wintry Stockholm

Writer: Helena Bergström

Right now we are living the houseboat life in wintry Stockholm. The snow has covered both the city and our marina in a thick white blanket. It's really nice! But maybe it's a bit different in a houseboat in winter than in a house or an apartment ...

Winter and snow in Stockholm

Some people like winter weather and others do not. The snow can certainly cause problems, but I am still one of those who like real winter. Unlike the dark and damp misery that usually befalls you at two degrees above zero, at least it's bright and beautiful.

Houseboating in winter

But what is it like to live in a houseboat in winter? Mostly cosy, we think! We have good heat indoors, and if it feels a bit chilly one day, we light a fire in the stove. We regularly have to sweep the gangway free of snow, but the jetty is cleared of snow by the marina.

During the stormy days fenders oblique and a wheels under the gangway broke (which happens from time to time). So we have had to re-tie the fenders and replace the wheel. Amazingly, we have a shop specialising in wheels (Tellus) within walking distance!

The sweeping brush, which we use to sweep snow from the gangway, came loose from the handle and disappeared into the depths (it's about ten metres deep here, so when you drop something it's usually gone forever). We were happy when we realised that you could buy a new brush, separately without a handle, at our nearest ICA. It only cost us 35 kronor and a bit of fiddling to get a new broom.

Everyday life with work, good TV series and other fun

Otherwise, we are living everyday life right now. We work a lot at the computers (production of texts and films, handling of adverts, accounting etc. etc.) and we also have some meetings, especially digitally. We have some new projects in the pipeline, which is fun but takes a lot of time.

To break up the time in front of the computers, we go for walks, run errands to the supermarket and watch some TV series. At the moment we subscribe to Apple TV and there we first watched ”Slow horses”, which we liked a lot. Now we are watching ”Pachinko”, which is a fascinating family saga that takes you to Korea and Japan in the 20th century. Very captivating, while learning a lot about history in this part of the world!

Peter has also had time to visit his favourite shop Taracci, now located on Gamla Brogatan in Stockholm. The owner and designer Feyo is now also a good friend, and on his last visit Peter got stuck on some pictures that ended up on Taracci's Instagram account: @taracciofficial !

This week: Grateful for…

Right now, we are grateful for this time of peace and quiet. Being home for a more continuous period allows us to catch up on work, and slow down a bit. We're also grateful that we have the time and peace to relax with some TV series. And we are grateful that snow makes the world beautiful!

Your turn ... What are you grateful for this week?

We have a nice view right now.

The week ahead

We'll be home for a while longer, but the first trip of the year is approaching... It will be a shorter trip (just over an hour by plane and only a few days on site) and we're very much looking forward to this little adventure. We'll tell you more soon!

Have a great Friday and weekend!
