When we left the tongue of land at Krynica Morska, in the far northeast of Poland, we rolled to the tri-city area of Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot. This is an incredibly beautiful area, and we have spent a lot of time here. Our best friends also have a summer apartment in Mechelinki, just west of Gdynia. We decided to surprise them!

From Krynica Morska to Mechelinki
We were, as you may recall, out at the Krynica Morska on that tongue of land that extends further into the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. We then drove to Sopot (the most exclusive resort on the Polish Riviera!) before deciding to surprise our friends in Mechelinki.
Short visit to Sopot
The three cities of Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot are close together and make up a fantastic area in Poland. Not least in the summer! We have been here several times and written about the beautiful city. Gdansk, the Polish Riviera at Sopot and the summer city Gdynia.
This time we rolled into Sopot just to check out two relatively new campsites, which we had not seen before. We checked out Camping Sopot 34 which is quite basic (with service houses in barracks), but still feels modern and has a really good location close to the beach, the centre and the train to Gdansk. Right next door (with a slightly worse location) there is also a larger ACSI controlled campsite.
Surprise
When we were at the campsite in Sopot, we decided to call Lennart and Beata, who we thought were in Mechelinki. It became a small, small lie when Peter called to check the situation. We wanted a surprise!
Peter: Are you in the countryside (Ring island) and building?
Lennart: No, no, we are in Poland!
Peter: So, what do you do?
Lennart: We go to IKEA and buy some stuff for the flat.
Peter: Oh, so it's home and assembly afterwards?
Lennart: Yes, exactly. Where are you then?
Peter: We are on that narrow strip of land closest to Kaliningrad.
Mechelinki
We were already in Sopot and had only 40 minutes to drive to the centre. Mechelinki. We rolled and parked outside Lennart and Beata's apartment building, only to realise that they weren't home yet. But after an hour they arrived (dragging various IKEA items). Guess they were surprised to see us on their driveway! There was a lot of Czech wine (which we brought with us), a lot of talking and laughing and even a meal at the Osada Wedrowca inn in Mechelinki.
If you're wondering about the weather, it varies wildly! One minute it's sunny and sunny. The next second it's cold and rainy. What a strange summer this is! Regardless of the weather, we had a great time with our friends in Mechelinki, Poland!

The weather really goes up and down! That day it was really cold. Yesterday it was suddenly lying on the beach weather. Today I don't know how it will be 😉 .

Nice to surprise and for them to be surprised. Nice that you also managed to look at a couple of campsites in the neighbourhood. Always good for those who are going to go out to get tips on good campsites.
Stay well!

Sopot is nice and we will probably want to stay there if we organise guided campervan trips in the future 🙂.

Agree with you that the area around Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia is great. Good that prospective visitors get tips on campsites. It makes it easier. Otherwise, it's easy to take a chance, which can be fun if you get it right, but also crazy if you're unlucky. We have experienced both.
13 July 2017 - 10:47
Helena says:
Of course it can be like that! We have also experienced both campsites that surprised positively, and those that you never want to return to ... 😉.

Gdansk for me means "Lech Walesa", who founded "Solidarity",
when he worked at the Gdansk shipyard. In 1983 he received the Nobel
Peace Prize. A remarkable man.
It's fun to surprise old friends, who don't mind being
surprised. 🙂

You really pulled off the surprise! Great fun!
I know exactly where the campsites in Sopot are located. There is no better location, I think. Nice that you check out different campsites. Oh Sopot is just sooooo best I think, especially since you can get to Gdansk and Gdynia as easily as possible when you do not have a car available. You can walk or take the train that runs every 10 minutes. Can't get any better!

Isn't this area incredibly beautiful? We have stayed at a campsite on another side of Sopot before, but these were definitely more central. Really good!

At least we have been to the three city region. We went by boat that time in a full storm. I crawled the whole journey home. I was hoarse for a week afterwards. (The Öland Bridge was closed that day because of the storm).
If I remember correctly, there's plenty of amber there, isn't there? I remember that we went on a guided tour by bus in the city. Time to go back by motorhome, it seems.

Helena says:
Travelling by ferry in a real storm sounds tough...! And yes, there is amber here. Walking around Gdansk there are lots of shops selling amber and amber jewellery.

What fun to surprise! I have heard so much good about Sopot now, I am curious!
But isn't there summer heat there now?
PS. No, the char we ate tasted good as a main course and not dessert!!! Haha, so crazy spinning post on my blog yesterday, so difficult to blog directly on the mobile phone now that the BlogPress app does not work!...we blame it! ;-D DS.
