Hiring a boat on holiday - in Sweden or abroad

Renting a boat on holiday, is it for you? We've rented small boats ourselves several times during our travels and we've also had the chance to go on some really cool sailing trips. There are also a number of boating and sailing holidays on our bucket list.

Great to be on water

It's probably no surprise that we love being on the water. We live in a houseboatand of course there's a reason why we chose that lifestyle. We love the sound of wind and water, and we enjoy being surrounded by boating and birds.

Our houseboat cannot be driven and some people ask why we don't have a "normal" boat parked next to it. That would be wonderful, of course, but buying a boat and renting a mooring in the centre of Stockholm involves a not inconsiderable cost, so it's not an option. However, we do enjoy boat trips on holiday!

Sailing or renting a boat on holiday

When we can, we like to rent a boat on holiday, or go on other types of boat trips. The two coolest boat trips we made were when we sailed with a Bavaria C50 in the Baltic Sea last summer and when we went on a sailing trip with the large school ship Gratia in the Stockholm archipelago a few years ago.

On these trips we were not alone on board, but we have also rented much smaller boats that we can handle ourselves - everything from motorboats to canoes. We have also dreamed and talked about boat trips that we would like to do. One dream is to travel by canal boat in France and another is to sail in Croatia. We've come so far that we've made dreamy plans with friends (who are qualified skippers), but we haven't got round to it yet.

Click&Boat - Hiring a boat (or renting a boat) online

Platforms Click&Boat has recently been launched in Sweden and is aimed at both those who want to rent a boat and those who want to charter. There are currently around 35,000 privately owned boats and charter arrangements to choose from, both in Sweden and in countries such as France, Croatia and Greece.

You simply click on the desired geographical location, date and the type of boat you are interested in renting. For those who are boat owners instead, the site offers the possibility of renting out the boat, thereby earning extra income when the boat is not in use.

We haven't tested the service, but we like the way it works. In general, we like the idea of renting and leasing. Not everyone needs to own everything, and if you only want to use a boat for a week on holiday, it's much easier and cheaper to rent than to own. We also like the idea of being able to easily book online, on the same site whether you want to rent a boat on holiday in Sweden or abroad.
