Travelling from the journey

Travelling from the trip - it was a new experience for us! We left the motorhome in Germany and flew - from Leipzig via Frankfurt - to Split in Croatia. It was a different feeling, for sure, but also a refreshing adventure!

After a few hours in the air and at Frankfurt airport, we landed in Split, where the lovely Mediterranean heat hit us immediately. We have had a really warm and cosy time in Germany, but the Mediterranean climate is still something special.

Staying in a hotel - for a change

We love to travel with our motorhome, but checking into a hotel is still a bit of a luxury. The first thing we did was to take a long and lovely shower!

The hotel we are staying at is called Cornaro, and has a great location in the centre of Split. The breakfast here is also totally cruelbut we'll come back to that another time. Below you see the view from our hotel window.

On site for the "Golden Pen Media Award"

So, what are we doing in Split? Well, we are there for the "Golden Pen Media Award", a prize awarded by the Croatian Tourist Board every year since 2004. The prize is awarded to international media that have produced good material about Croatia in the past year in three categories: print, radio/TV and blog.

We have been nominated in the blog category and are here with a bunch of other journalists and bloggers from different countries, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, Hungary and Slovakia.

On the first day we were taken on a guided tour, ending with a show at Diocletian's Palace.

At the end of the show, we were surprised by the "emperor" presenting the Golden Pen Award and welcoming all the journalists and bloggers to the "stage". Suddenly we were the ones standing up there looking down...!

In the evening it was dinner for the whole gang. Lots of good food at "Gradska kavana & restaurant Central". When the actual award ceremony takes place? It will be tonight!

Best this week

Best thing about this week? We have experienced incredibly beautiful nature and visited very charming little gems in Germany. We have had time to tell you about Germany's longest suspension bridge and about the "witch's village" Thale in the Harz, but we have also visited a few superfine locations that we haven't had time to tell you about yet.

It is also fantastic that we had the opportunity to visit Split again, and we are extremely honoured to have been nominated for the "Golden Pen Award".

We had almost forgotten how wonderful it is to be in Croatia. The air is balmy, people stroll around in their summer clothes and outdoor cafes beckon at every corner.

The atmosphere in Split is relaxed and just outside the city the boats chug back and forth across the crystal clear and shimmering green water. Inside the city centre, the stone tiles are softly polished and it feels like walking around someone's living room. All around are the historic remains of Diocletian's palace. So this setting, wow!

This time we also tried something in Split that we had never tried before. Using VR glasses, we travelled around a historical version of the palace. Really cool and fascinating!

It has been an intense and somewhat stressful week (while all this is happening we are finalising the magazine) but we are extremely happy and grateful for all the great experiences! So great to experience the mediterranean again!

And you, what can you highlight as positive from your week?

The week ahead

We stay in Split for one more day, and then we fly back to Germany to continue our motorhome trip. Here at freedomtravel.se you will be able to read both about Split and about destinations and experiences in Saxony-Anhalt and along the Crossroads. Don't miss it!
