Travelling to Japan doesn't have to cost the earth. On the contrary - if you time your trip right, it can be an incredibly affordable experience. Travel agents advise that September is the best time to travel. That's when airfares are cheapest and the weather is still pleasant. Here are the tips that can make your Tokyo trip a great autumn experience.

Evening entertainment in Tokyo
As night falls and the city's neon lights come on, there are many ways to enjoy Tokyo. A trend among locals and visitors alike is live casino, a digital form of casino gaming where you can play classic table games such as blackjack and roulette with real dealers via streaming, directly on your mobile phone or tablet.
Discover the pulse of the city
Tokyo is a city that never stops. With a population of over 37 million, the Greater Tokyo area is considered the world's most populous city. The city is best known for its intense environments and high-tech cityscape - but that doesn't mean you can't find peace. Explore Yoyogi Park and Meiji Jinja to step into another time, filled with greenery and ancient temples. Or explore the gardens around the Imperial Palace for a quiet stroll with a historical touch.

Scenic relaxation spots
For true nature lovers, Tokyo also has plenty to offer. Shinjuku Gyoen and Inokashira Park offer a strong sense of cosiness with classic Japanese gardens, rowing boats and tree avenues. Tokyo's parks are perfect for a nice picnic or a row on the lake.
But for the sporty nature lover, Mount Takao is highly recommended. Just a short train ride from the city centre, Mount Takao offers a comfortable hike, ending on a grand view of inner Tokyo. Lifts are available for the downhill route, or part of the uphill route. The view is particularly stunning in autumn, when the treetops change colour. The change is so beautiful that there is even a word for it in Japanese: kouyou (紅葉).
Why travel in autumn?
As in Europe, Japan has experienced several heat spikes in recent years. The Japanese autumn offers a more pleasant and milder weather. Autumn is therefore a (not so) hot tip for those who want to avoid Tokyo's summer heat which can easily reach 40°C

Onsen around Tokyo
Natural Japanese hot springs - known as onsen - are one of the country's best-loved forms of relaxation. The baths are often located in scenic areas, in traditional Japanese inns (ryokan), which can be likened to Western spas. The water is heated by volcanic activity and is rich in minerals that are said to have beneficial effects on both skin and joints.
- Shimobe Onsen - about 1.5 hours from Shinjuku. Shimobe Hotel offers rooms from around $970, or private onsen hire for around $300 per 40 minutes.
- Kusatsu Onsen - about 3 hours from Tokyo. Day passes to public baths often cost under ¥1000 (about $65).
- Gero Onsen - about 4 hours by train from Tokyo. Hotels from around ¥20,000 (about £1,250) including meals, but day spas are available from ¥500 (about £33).

Tokyo - a city with everything for everyone
Tokyo offers a unique mix of city and nature. Travel in autumn for a pleasant climate, lower airfares and a quieter city environment. Visit affordable onsen or ryokan for a peaceful end to the day's adventures. Whether you're looking for urban excitement or peaceful relaxation, there's something for everyone.
