Arboga

Arboga is one of Sweden's best preserved medieval towns and feels almost like it was made for a quiet weekend. Perhaps we were a little surprised that so few tourists found their way here.

Peter has a connection to Arboga – he spent a lot of time here over a ten-year period when his eldest son was a child. Now he could guide me to the city's best spots.

Arboga is a nice little town that surprises. Here you will find 10 tips for experiences and things to do in Arboga and the surrounding area.

1. Visit the Holy Trinity Church

The Church of the Holy Trinity is Arboga's most impressive building and one of the city's most important sights. The church was built during the Middle Ages and is known for its high tower, its arches and its beautiful frescoes.

If you are curious about history, you can also check out Sankt Nicolai Church, where the Arboga meeting was held in 1435–1436 – what is often called Sweden's first parliament.

2. Take a city walk in old Arboga

Arboga is perfect to discover on foot. Here you will find cobblestone streets, old merchant houses and well-preserved wooden houses from several centuries. Just walking around the historic quarters is an experience in itself. Take the opportunity to walk along the Arbogaån and peek into small courtyards and alleys.

3. See the Town Hall and the Main Square

In the middle of Arboga lies Stora Torget, surrounded by historic buildings and with a quiet small-town feel that is hard not to like. Here you will find the city's town hall from the 15th century, but also several other beautiful houses.

Although Arboga is a relatively small town, there are several interesting museums. Opening hours are limited, so if you want to visit, it is wise to check the websites in advance. These museums may be worth a visit:

After learning more about the city's brewing history at the Brewery Museum, it's perfect to settle down at a pub or restaurant and order an Arboga beer.

6. Swim at the Kvarnsjön bathing area

If you want to combine a city walk with a refreshing swim, Kvarnsjön's bathing spot is a great option just outside the city center. Here, a small lake surrounded by forest awaits you, with a bathing jetty, grassy areas and a peaceful atmosphere.

When we were here we were actually a little surprised by how nice it was – a real little summer gem that feels much more secluded than you might think. Perfect for a break on warm days, or for a picnic in nature.

7. Take a trip to Hjälmare doll

About 15 minutes from Arboga lies Hjälmare Dock – Sweden's oldest dry dock, built in the 1630s. Here industrial history, canal romance and scenic surroundings meet.

It's exciting to look out at the boats and canal environments. There is also a parking lot for campers and a café with food, ice cream and nice patios with views over the water.

8. Follow the Hjälmare channel

Hjälmare Canal is Sweden's oldest man-made canal and a fascinating place for those interested in history. Here you can walk, cycle or just enjoy the tranquility along the water. On some days there are also boat trips to book. The canal is short, but historically very significant.

9. Enjoy nature at Herrfallet

Herrfallet, by Lake Hjälmaren, is a popular outdoor recreation area with camping, a swimming area and nice walking trails. There is also a nature reserve and plenty of opportunities for fishing and canoeing. A perfect excursion on warm summer days.

10. Hike in the Säby Mountains

Säbybergen Nature Reserve offers beautiful hiking in hilly terrain, old pine forests and views of the landscape. It is a quiet and relatively unknown area - perfect if you want to combine a city visit with nature. Bring a coffee.

Day 1: City and history

Start at the Church of the Holy Trinity and continue with a self-guided city walk through the historic quarters. Visit the Arboga Museum and end the day with dinner and perhaps a beer in the city center.

Day 2: Canal and nature

Take a trip to Hjälmare dock and Hjälmare canal. Continue on to Herrfallet or Säbybergen for nature experiences and swimming or hiking.

  • Arboga is perfect for a day trip, but feel free to stay one night to catch the excursions.
  • Bring comfortable shoes – the city center is best discovered on foot.
  • Summertime is best if you want to combine city, swimming and nature.
  • Arboga Medieval Days are arranged at the beginning of August. – when the city becomes a living medieval environment with markets and jesters.
