Friday Blog: An Unexpected Visit to a Greek Island (90 Minutes)

When we recently traveled to Greece, we knew we would visit Naxos and Sifnos. Visiting Paros wasn’t part of the plan. But now we’ve been to Paros anyway – at least for 90 minutes – and that has to count as a visit, right?

From Athens to Naxos

We traveled from Stockholm to Athens, and from the port city of Piraeus we continued by ferry to the Greek island of Naxos. Here we spent a few days – with sun and swimming, guided tours, explorations and restaurant visits. Then it was time for us to move on to the next island: Sifnos.

From Naxos to Sifnos… or?

The boat to Sifnos was to depart from Naxos in the afternoon and arrive in Sifnos four hours later. It was a fast boat (SeaJet Super Jet 2) and Sifnos is not located so far from Naxos. Why would it take so long?

We studied the timetable a little more carefully and realized that the route was not entirely optimal for us going to Sifnos:

• Naxos 15:20
• Paros 15:50
• Mykonos 16:50
• Paros 6:00 PM (again!)
• Sifnos 19:05

So we were going to go to Paros, then in the ”wrong” direction towards Mykonos and back to Paros, before it was time to head towards Sifnos. Well, what were we going to do about it? All we had to do was get on board and prepare for four hours on the blue waves.

90 minutes on Paros

But as we approached Paros, another idea began to take shape, thanks to our seat neighbors who had the same plan. Why not get off in Paros, hang out there for an hour and a half… and then get on again when the boat was about to make its second visit to Paros?

We asked the staff on board and the plan went smoothly. We left our bags on board the boat and got off at Paros – an island we had not intended to visit on this trip at all.

We didn't see much of Paros, of course. We found a simple outdoor bar where we each had a beer and then sat and worked at the computers. However, it was a very nice break from an otherwise long and monotonous boat trip.

After 90 minutes, the Seajet Superjet 2 returned and we were able to board again, to our seats and our bags. The journey then continued for an hour to the island of Sifnos.

Then Sifnos…

We have now spent a few days on the peaceful and fantastically beautiful island of Sifnos. Here we have really come to terms with the fact that we have enjoyed the cozy alleys, taverns by the beach, the lapping of the waves and sunsets. We have also encountered the local culture, in the form of ceramics, local dishes and absolutely wonderful farm animals.

This week: Grateful for ...

This week we are of course grateful to have experienced two more Greek islands. As usual, when we have been to Greece, we feel that we have met people and families – not just seen a country. Fantastic!

The week ahead
