The most enticing is the historic island of Ortigia, where it is easy to get lost among beautiful houses and small squares. We did just that and fell head over heels for the city.

Churches, palaces, grand staircases and imaginative balconies follow each other along the streets. Behind the beautiful baroque city there is also a dramatic history. The old Noto was destroyed in an earthquake in 1693 and a completely new city was built on another site.

Updated: September 2026 | When we were traveling by campervan along the southern coast of Sicily in the summer of 2015, we found Salvamar Camper Sosta just outside Pozzallo. After several scorching hot pitches on asphalt, the green grass felt almost like pure luxury. Here we stayed for a few days among fig trees, cats and fish ponds and also received unexpected help with an incipient LPG problem. The pitch is still there today.

We arrived here by camper van in the middle of the Sicilian summer heat and received a warm welcome at the campsite. Then beach life, ice cream parlors and a lunch awaited us that still belongs to our stranger food experiences in Italy.
