Updated: October 2026 | Traveling to Zanzibar was never really part of our plan. We had traveled to Kenya over Christmas and New Year 2007/2008, but after the unrest in connection with the election, the trip took a completely different turn. We left Kenya, continued through Tanzania and finally ended up in Zanzibar. There were paradise beaches, extreme tides, boat trips, giant turtles and the occasional unexpected encounter.

Insuring this boat and our accommodation has not been easy ... We have talked to so many insurance companies, and most of them laugh or reply that it is impossible to insure a houseboat. So far we have managed to take out insurance, but it has not been easy.

The washing machine salesman wondered how we would fit the machine in the car. In the car! That was the least of the problems, so to speak ... We had calculated that the washing machine would fit in the boiler room, but hadn't really thought about how to get it there.

How much trouble can you have with a sewage pump? We can't even count how many times the sewage has sprayed straight out, or how many times we've had to manage without water and sewage. We have a new sewage pump now, but the problems aren't solved yet...

One of the things I really like about houseboating is being so close to nature. You can hear the water lapping and when I cook breakfast I see ducks, herons (yes, yesterday there were two) and perch. This morning some birds had a race on the roof, and I heard them chasing each other back and forth.

In addition to Aquavillas and traditional houseboats, there are three "Villa Voyager" here in Pampas Marina. These are oblong little floating houses for permanent living, with large doors at the ends and small windows along the sides.
