Now we are just about ready to leave northern Albania with Shkoder and Lake Shkoder and head north into Montenegro. In total we have spent about three weeks in Albania, mainly in the southern part. We call it a "site" because we're in a gravel car park, but it has all the services you'd expect from a modern western campsite.

This small strip of beach is home to five (!) campsites, a small number of restaurants and a few very small hotels. You can just imagine how a holiday resort is built from scratch. The source "Syri i Kalter", Blue eye, is located in southern Albania, not far from the city of Saranda. We drove here directly after our visit to Butrint, and must say that the road to the mountains is absolutely beautiful. It feels like nature is doing well, because it is intensely green and right next to it the clear mountain water flows in a wide channel. But this is of course nothing compared to what we will soon see and experience.

Butrint is an archaeological site in southern Albania. The city was inhabited for about 3000 years, and the oldest finds date back to 800 BC. There are ruins from completely different eras, and walking around the site you can travel back in your imagination to many different times in history.
