We are looking for participants with a motorhome

We at FREEDOMtravel, together with our partners, are looking for three campervan crews (one or two people/camper) who want to join us on a fun and exciting campervan trip in Germany. 24 May to 1 June this year.

The German tourist office wants to showcase the beautiful northern parts of Germany (Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) in a different way and is therefore looking for participants who want to try the "Beach Basket Challenge". We at FREEDOMtravel will be one of a total of 7 motorhomes on the trip and we see really looking forward to this!

What is the Beach Basket Challenge?

The Beach Basket Challenge is a joint motorhome trip through the northern part of Germany. We will experience beautiful views from the north-west to the north-east of the country. The journey goes through the states of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, along the Baltic Sea.

What is a beach basket?

A beach basket (Strandkorb in German) is a piece of beach furniture used in many Baltic Sea resorts. They are often made of wood, wicker and fabric and can accommodate two people. Comfortably reclining in your beach basket, you are protected from wind, rain, sand and sunburn.

The very first beach basket was invented in Rostock in 1882, when a woman with rheumatic complaints ordered a piece of beach furniture that would protect her from the elements but still allow her to spend time on the beach. Today, everyone on Germany's long white beaches wants a beach chair, and the beach chair is considered a cultural artefact that stands for German cosiness.

What do you mean "challenge"?

The beach basket challenge is called "challenge" because several fun challenges will be organised along the way, where the participating 7 motorhomes will "compete" against each other.

Themes for the trip (and for the challenges!) can include beach baskets, breweries, beaches, cycling, picturesque towns, castles and culinary experiences. We don't know what the challenges will look like, but it could be anything from a treasure hunt to beer tasting. Or maybe something completely different? There will also be some sightseeing, of course!

This is the route

The trip starts on the evening of 24 May in Gothenburg, where we take Stena Line's comfortable ferry to Kiel. On board we enjoy a pleasant evening together. Stena Line offers dinner and comfortable cabins. A wonderful start to our journey!

We then continue together through Schleswig-Holstein, where the first challenges are organised. We then continue to the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where we visit both the Lake District and the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg.

We leave Rügen on 1 June and travel on the Stena Line ferry from Sassnitz to Rügen. Trelleborg. Before departure, we have the opportunity to shop cheaply in the Border Shop. On board, Stena Line offers a good buffet while we summarise our experiences together. Four hours later we arrive at Trelleborg harbour.

This is a perfect way to organise a road trip that even those who are not on this trip can do. You decide on the length of the journey, and you will get lots of suggestions and tips on things to see and do along the way!

Experiences while travelling

All the details of the trip are not nailed down yet, but what is certain is that there is a lot to see and do along the route! In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, we will visit both the lake area Lake District (Mecklenburgische Seenplatte) and Mecklenburg's Baltic coast In addition, we will experience the beautiful city of Mecklenburg (Ostseeküste Mecklenburg). Schwerin and the lovely island Rügen.

Schwerin

Schwerin is the capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Here you will find, among other things Schwerin Castle, which looks like a fairytale castle with all its spires and towers. The power of the fairy tale is not diminished by the fact that the castle has a thousand years of history, which of course we plan to discover more about!

Rügen

Another area we plan to familiarise ourselves with during the trip is the island of Rügen, often described as an island paradise. Rügen is also located in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is known for its white limestone cliffs, among other things. The island is also known for its beach baskets and for its lovely piers and seaside hotels.

What is included?

The German Tourist Board, TMV and Stena Line are responsible for campsites, meals (except breakfast) and all challenges organised during the trip. Stena Line is responsible for the ferry journeys including cabin and meal on board (not drinks other than meal drinks). Participants are responsible for the motorhome, fuel, breakfast and other personal expenses.

We look forward to the trip!

We are really looking forward to this trip! We have travelled a bit in northern Germany, but we have never been to Rügen, for example, which we have heard so many positive things about. To be able to experience these regions together with a group of motorhome drivers - it will be so much fun! Some of the participants have already been selected in other ways, but we have three places left to fill. Could it be you?

Photo and film

During the trip, both we and perhaps other participants will take photos and films of our experiences, and some of the photos and films will be published online and on social media. You should therefore be prepared to be photographed in these contexts.
